(1) The Glory Revealed at the Feast
John tells us that the miracle at Cana was not merely an act of kindness for an embarrassed wedding host. He is explicit about its meaning:
“This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” (John 2:11)
In John’s Gospel, a sign is never just power on display; it is a revelation of who Jesus is. The turning of water into wine pulls back the curtain and shows something of the glory that belongs to Him as the Son of God.
(2) Why Wine? Why a Feast?
Isaiah 25:6–9 gives us the prophetic background that makes Cana explode with meaning. The prophet describes the future salvation of God as a feast:
- Rich food
- Well-aged, refined wine
- The swallowing up of death
- The wiping away of tears
- The joyful confession: “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him.”
This feast is not merely about abundance—it is about redemption, joy, and the end of the curse. Wine, in Scripture, often symbolises joy, blessing, and the fullness of God’s salvation (compare with Ps. 104:15; Amos 9:13).
When Jesus produces an extraordinary abundance of excellent wine at a wedding feast, He is silently declaring: the promised age is beginning.
(3) From Purification Water to Messianic Wine
John is careful to tell us what kind of water Jesus used:
“Six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification…” (John 2:6)
These jars represented the old order—ceremonial cleansing, repetition, and anticipation. Jesus does not discard them; He fills them to the brim and transforms their contents.
The message is unmistakable:
The old purification gives way to new joy.
The shadow gives way to the substance.
What the Law could only prepare for, Jesus now fulfills.
(4) “You Have Kept the Good Wine Until Now”
The master of the feast unwittingly preaches the gospel:
“You have kept the good wine until now.” (John 2:10)
In redemptive history, God has indeed saved the best for last. The prophets promised; the Law prepared; but in Christ, the fullness arrives. The superior wine points to the superiority of Jesus Himself—greater than Moses, greater than the old covenant, greater than all previous revelations of God’s saving work.
Cana whispers what the cross will later shout: God’s final and best gift is His Son.
(5) Glory That Leads to Faith
John concludes with the result: “And his disciples believed in him.”
This is the ultimate purpose—not only of this miracle, but of all the signs Jesus performs. His glory is not revealed to impress, but to invite faith. The miracle creates no spectacle for the crowds; it deepens trust among His disciples.
So it remains today: Every God-initiated experience, every providence, every grace is meant to move us toward the same confession Isaiah foresaw:
“Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him… let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”
Devotional Takeaway
At Cana, Jesus does not merely rescue a wedding from failure—He announces the arrival of the Messianic feast. The wine flows because the Bridegroom has come (cf. John 3:29). And where He is present, joy is not diminished but perfected.
The glory of Jesus is this:
- He turns emptiness into abundance,
- ritual into relationship,
- anticipation into fulfillment.
And when His glory is seen for who it truly is, the only fitting response is the same one His first disciples gave: They believed in Him.

(1) 筵席中显明的荣耀
约翰明确指出迦拿的神迹并非单纯为解救难堪的新郎而施的善举,其深层意义在于:

(2) 为何是酒?为何是筵席?

(3) 从洁净之水到弥赛亚之酒
约翰特别指出耶稣使用的是何种水:
“在那里有六口石缸,每口可盛两三桶水,是为犹太人行洁净礼用的。”(约翰福音2:6)
这些石缸象征旧制度——仪式洁净、重复与期待。耶稣并未弃之不用,而是将它们注满至口,彻底改变了其中的内容。
信息清晰无误:
旧式洁净让位于新欢喜。
影子让位于实体。
律法仅能预备之事,如今由耶稣成就。
(4) “你倒把好酒留到现在”
宴席主管不经意间宣讲了福音:
“你倒把好酒留到现在。”(约翰福音2:10)
在救赎历史中,上帝确实将最好的留到最后。先知曾应许,律法曾预备,但在基督里,丰盛终得显明。上好的酒昭示耶稣自身的至高——他超越摩西,超越旧约,超越上帝一切救赎工作的先前启示。
迦拿的低语预示着十字架的宣告:上帝最终且最珍贵的礼物,就是他的儿子。
(5) 引领信心的荣耀
约翰以结果作结:“他的门徒就信了他。”
这正是终极目的——不仅是此神迹的目的,更是耶稣所行一切神迹的目的。祂的荣耀显现并非为博取惊叹,而是为邀请信心。神迹并非为众人制造奇观,而是深化门徒的信靠。
今日亦然:每一次神主动的经历、每一次的眷顾、每一次的恩典,都旨在引领我们走向以赛亚预见的告白:
“看哪,这是我们的神,我们等候他……我们要欢喜快乐,因他的救恩。”
灵修要点
在迦拿,耶稣不仅挽救了婚礼的败局——祂宣告了弥赛亚筵席的降临。酒源源不绝,因新郎已来(参约翰福音3:29)。祂所在之处,喜乐非但未减,反得完全。
耶稣的荣耀在于:
- 祂使贫瘠化为丰盛,
- 使仪式升华为关系,
- 使盼望成为应验。
当祂的荣耀显明其真貌时,唯有一样回应配得——正如首批门徒所作的回应:他们信了祂。
