Why are you following Jesus? Is it because of who He is… or just what He can give you? In John 6, the crowd wanted bread—but the disciples discovered something far greater. Let’s talk about the difference.

When life gets hard, we run to God for help… but what if we’re missing the greatest gift He offers? Not just provision—but His presence. Let’s dive into John 6.

The disciples were in the middle of a storm—darkness, wind, and waves threatening to overwhelm them. Then, in one of the most awe-inspiring moments in Scripture, Jesus comes walking on the sea. They are afraid… until He speaks: “It is I; do not be afraid” (John 6:20). And the moment they receive Him into the boat, “immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going” (John 6:21).

What a miracle. No gradual progress. No more struggling against the wind. Just… arrival.

Meanwhile, the crowd is searching for Jesus. They had seen Him multiply the loaves. They had eaten and were filled. Now they want more. They follow Him—but why?

(1) The Heart Question: Why Are You Following Jesus?

This passage quietly sets up a deeper issue that unfolds later in John 6: Are we following Jesus for who He is, or for what He gives? This is important—if not, you would follow and worship whoever can give you what you wanted, which might be dangerous at worst or unhelpful in the least.

The crowd pursued Him because of the bread—the miracle, the provision, the benefits. And yet, the disciples experienced something far greater than bread: they experienced His presence in the storm and His power to bring them safely home.

There is nothing wrong with bringing our needs to Jesus. He cares. He provides. He feeds. But if our faith stops at “what can I get from Him?”, we miss the greater miracle.

(2) The Greater Miracle: His Presence

The disciples didn’t ask for bread that night. They needed rescue. And Jesus gave them Himself.

In fear, He gave His voice: “It is I.”
In danger, He gave His presence: He got into the boat.
In struggle, He gave His power: immediate arrival.

Sometimes we seek Jesus for provision, but He wants to give us something deeper—peace in the storm and closeness with Him.

“Immediately… at the Land” (John 6:21).  That phrase is easy to miss, but it’s profound. The journey that was impossible in their own strength was completed instantly in His presence. This is a picture of the Christian life: We strain, strive, and fear, then we receive Jesus fully and He accomplishes what we could never do on our own. He does this, not always by removing the storm instantly—but always by ensuring we reach the destination He intends!

(3) Right or Wrong?

Following Jesus for bread isn’t entirely wrong—it’s just incomplete. It’s right to depend on Him. It’s right to seek His provision. But it’s insufficient if that’s all we want. The invitation is deeper: Don’t just seek what Jesus can give—seek Jesus Himself. This is because bread satisfies for a moment, but Jesus satisfies forever.

Application

Ask yourself honestly:
(a) Do I follow Jesus mainly when I need something?
(b) Am I more excited about His gifts… or His presence?
(c) Would I still follow Him in the storm, even without the “bread”?

The crowd of Jesus’ time struggled with these questions too. They are not new. Regardless of your pay grade, residential address, diet or material possessions you have now, the question remains the same. We still can ask God to guide and lead us forward to get to know and follow Him better and better each day.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I confess that I often seek You for what You can give me. Forgive me for settling for bread when You offer Jesus Christ your Son. Teach me to trust You in the storms of life, to welcome You into every part of my life, and to desire Your presence above all else. Bring me safely to the place You are leading me—not by my strength, but by Your power. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

门徒们正身处风暴之中——黑暗、狂风和巨浪威胁着要将他们吞没。随后，在圣经中最令人敬畏的时刻之一，耶稣踏浪而来。门徒们惊恐万分……直到祂开口说：“是我，不要怕”（约翰福音6:20）。当他们接祂上船的那一刻，“船就立刻到了他们要去的地方”（约翰福音6:21）。

何等奇妙的奇迹。没有循序渐进的过程，不再与风浪搏斗，只是……抵达了。

与此同时，人群正在寻找耶稣。他们曾亲眼看见祂使饼增多，他们吃饱了，如今却想要更多。他们跟随祂——但究竟为何？

(1) 核心之问：你为何跟随耶稣？

这段经文悄然引出了约翰福音第六章后文将展开的更深层问题：我们跟随耶稣，是因为祂是谁，还是因为祂所赐的？这一点至关重要——否则，你就会追随并敬拜任何能给你想要之物的人，这在最坏的情况下可能很危险，至少也是无益的。

众人追随祂，是因为那饼——那神迹、那供应、那恩惠。然而，门徒们所经历的，远比饼更为宝贵：他们在风暴中体会到了祂的同在，也见证了祂将他们平安带回家的能力。

将我们的需要带到耶稣面前，这并没有错。祂关心我们，祂供应我们，祂喂养我们。但如果我们的信心止步于 “我能从祂那里得到什么？”，我们就错过了更大的神迹。

(2) 更大的神迹：祂的同在

那晚，门徒们并没有求饼。他们需要的是拯救。而耶稣将祂自己赐给了他们。

在恐惧中，祂发出声音：“是我。”
在危难中，祂赐下同在：祂上了船。
在挣扎中，祂施展大能：瞬间抵达。

有时我们寻求耶稣是为了得着供应，但祂想要赐给我们更深的东西——风暴中的平安，以及与祂的亲近。

“船就立刻到了他们要去的地方”（约翰福音6:21）。这句话很容易被忽略，却蕴含深意。凭着自己的力量无法完成的旅程，在祂同在之下瞬间便抵达了。这就是基督徒生命的写照：我们竭力挣扎、奋力拼搏、心怀恐惧，然后全然接受耶稣，祂便成就了我们凭己力永远无法做到的事。祂这样做，并非总是立刻平息风暴——但祂总是确保我们抵达祂所预定的目的地！

(3) 对还是错？

为了得着饼而跟随耶稣，并非全然错误——只是不够完整。倚靠祂是正确的，寻求祂的供应也是正确的。但如果我们只求这些，那就远远不够。这邀请的内涵更深：不要只寻求耶稣能赐予的——要寻求耶稣本人。因为饼只能暂时满足，但耶稣能永远满足我们。

应用

诚实地问问自己：
(a) 我是否主要在需要什么的时候才跟随耶稣？
(b) 我更热衷于祂的恩赐……还是祂的同在？
(c) 即使没有“面包”，我是否仍会在风暴中跟随祂？

耶稣时代的群众也曾为这些问题挣扎。这些问题并非新鲜事。无论你的薪资水平、居住地、饮食习惯或现有的物质财富如何，这个问题依然如故。我们仍可求神引导我们，让我们每天都能更深地认识祂、跟随祂。

祷告

亲爱的主，我承认自己常常因祢能赐予我什么而寻求祢。求祢赦免我，因祢赐下祢的儿子耶稣基督，我却只满足于“饼”。求祢教导我在人生的风暴中信靠祢，将祢迎接到我生命的每个角落，并比任何事物都更渴慕祢的同在。求祢凭祢的大能，而非我的力量，将我平安带到祢所引领的地方。奉耶稣的名祷告。阿们。
