Ezekiel 35 brings out God’s justice, pride, and the call to humility.

📖 Scripture:
Ezekiel 35:5–6 (ESV)
“Because you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity… therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you.”

🔍 Background:

Ezekiel 35 is God’s prophecy of judgment against Mount Seir, representing Edom, Israel’s ancient rival. This isn't just about political tension. Edom celebrated Israel’s downfall, took advantage of their suffering, and fueled the fire of hatred in their pride.

While chapters before and after focus on the restoration of Israel, this chapter is a reminder: God sees injustice, and He judges pride and hostility, especially when it is directed at His people.

🔥 Reflection:

Edom’s greatest sin wasn't just warfare—it was gloating over a fallen brother.

“You cherished perpetual enmity…” (v. 5)
“You said, ‘These two nations… shall be mine’” (v. 10)

This spirit of pride, bitterness, and entitlement led to judgment. Edom believed they had the upper hand when Israel was down, but they forgot something crucial:

God defends His people, even when they’re being disciplined.
God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. (cf. James 4:6)

This warning is timeless. We may not be Edom, but we often fall into similar sins:

Celebrating when someone we dislike fails.

Thinking we're better than others because we’re “not like them.”

Trying to claim what doesn’t belong to us.

But the Gospel flips this upside down. Jesus humbled Himself, even though He had every right to reign. He did not gloat over our fall, but entered into our suffering to redeem us.

🧭 Application:

(1) Are you holding on to old rivalries or resentments?
Edom “cherished” enmity. Bitterness is easy to hold on to, but it always poisons the heart.

(2) Are you humble before God, or silently gloating over others?
We don’t have to say it aloud. God sees when we inwardly celebrate someone else's failure. Instead, we’re called to grieve over sin, not gloat over sinners.

(3) Do you trust God's justice, or try to take matters into your own hands?
God will deal with wrongs—He always does. We don’t need to play judge, jury, or executioner. Vengeance belongs to the Lord (Rom. 12:19).

🙏 Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve held bitterness or pride in my heart. Help me to humble myself before You and to treat others with mercy, not malice. I thank You that even when I was Your enemy, Christ died for me. Help me to live with a heart shaped by that grace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

💡 Key Takeaway:

God sees pride and punishes enmity, but gives grace to the humble. Let the Gospel shape how you respond to others—especially when they fall.
