Have you ever noticed that Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a donkey's colt—not a war horse? That single detail fulfilled prophecy, revealed the kind of King He is, and exposed the pride of His enemies. In the next few minutes, let's discover what John 12 teaches us about the humble King—and our own hearts.
Two groups saw the same Jesus. One worshiped Him. The other worried about losing power. Which group are you more like?
John records Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem as more than a memorable event. It is the fulfillment of God's promises and a revelation of the true identity of Jesus Christ. The passage also exposes the contrasting responses of those who welcomed Him and those who rejected Him.
(1) The Prophecy of Zechariah
Zechariah 9:9 points to who Jesus is in the grand scheme of God's redemptive plan. He is the promised King who comes riding on a donkey's colt—not a horse, but a donkey; not a full-grown animal, but a young donkey. In the ancient world, a conquering king often rode a war horse to symbolise military power. Jesus deliberately entered Jerusalem on a donkey's colt to reveal that His kingdom is marked by humility, peace, and righteousness. He came first to save sinners rather than to conquer nations by force.
John reminds us that this event fulfilled prophecy spoken centuries earlier. Nothing about Jesus' ministry happened by chance. God had planned and promised the coming of His King long before Jesus entered Jerusalem. The crowd welcomed Him with palm branches and loud praises, while those who had witnessed the raising of Lazarus continued to testify about Him (John 12:17). Their faithful witness led many others to believe that Jesus truly is the Messiah. God's people are likewise called to bear witness to Christ so that others may come to know Him.
(2) The Politics of the Pharisees
The Pharisees looked at the same event but saw something entirely different. John 12:19 records their complaint: "You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him." Their concern was not whether Jesus fulfilled Scripture or whether He was truly God's promised King. Their concern was influence, control, and popularity. They feared losing their position as the crowds gathered around Jesus.
The contrast is striking. The witnesses pointed people to Christ, while the Pharisees pointed people to themselves. One group rejoiced that Jesus was being glorified; the other was frustrated that their own influence was fading.
What is your choice today?
Will you receive Jesus as your humble and sovereign King, or will you cling to pride, recognition, and personal gain? Will you faithfully bear witness to Him, or will you seek to build your own reputation?
Follow and serve the King who rides on a donkey's colt. Get off the high horse, humble yourself before Christ, and gladly point others to Him. The King who entered Jerusalem in humility is the same King who now reigns in glory and is worthy of your wholehearted trust, worship, and obedience. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem wasn't just a parade—it was prophecy fulfilled and a call to humble ourselves before the true King.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, our humble and victorious King, just as You promised. Forgive us when we seek recognition, power, or personal gain instead of honouring Christ. Teach us to humble ourselves, faithfully bear witness to Your Son, and follow Him with wholehearted obedience. May our lives bring glory to You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.

(1) 撒迦利亚的预言

法利赛人看着同一件事，却看到了截然不同的景象。约翰福音12:19记载了他们的抱怨：“你们看，你们都是徒劳无功，世人都去跟随他了！” 他们关心的并非耶稣是否应验了经文，也非祂是否真是神所应许的君王。他们所关心的只是影响力、控制权和声望。当人群聚集在耶稣周围时，他们担心会失去自己的地位。
这种对比令人震撼。见证人引导人们归向基督，而法利赛人却引导人们归向自己。一方因耶稣得荣耀而欢喜；另一方却因自身影响力日渐消退而沮丧。
今天，你的选择是什么？
你会接受耶稣作为你谦卑而至高的君王，还是执着于骄傲、名望和个人利益？你会忠心地为祂作见证，还是试图建立自己的声誉？
跟随并侍奉那位骑着驴驹的君王。放下高傲，在基督面前谦卑自己，并乐意引导他人归向祂。那位谦卑进入耶路撒冷的君王，正是如今在荣耀中掌权的君王，祂配得你全心的信靠、敬拜和顺服。耶稣进入耶路撒冷不仅仅是一场游行——那是预言的应验，也是呼召我们在这位真君王面前谦卑自己。
祷告
天父，感谢祢照着祢的应许，差遣了耶稣——我们谦卑而得胜的君王。当我们追求名利、权势或个人利益，而非尊荣基督时，求祢赦免我们。求祢教导我们谦卑自己，忠心地为祢的儿子作见证，并全心顺服地跟随祂。愿我们的生命唯独荣耀祢。奉耶稣的名祷告，阿们。
