What if you had less money, fewer possessions, and less success—but still had everything you truly needed? 1 Timothy 6 reveals the secret to real contentment: Christ is enough. So, are you living for what you have—or for the One you have?

1 Timothy 6 calls believers to live out the gospel in how we work, treat others, handle money, and guard the truth.

(1) Show Respect. Serve Excellently — vv. 1–2

Paul begins with relationships in the workplace. Christians are called to honour those in authority and serve faithfully. Our work is an opportunity to honour Christ. We should work well even when no one is watching and regardless of whether we like our supervisor. Excellence is an expression of faithfulness.

Application:
*Honor those God has placed in authority.
*Work diligently, even when the work seems ordinary.
*Let your conduct demonstrate the gospel.
*Remember that you ultimately serve Christ.

Question: If someone observed the way I work, would they see evidence of my faith in Christ?

(2) Contentment with Little Because We Have Christ — vv. 3–10

Paul warns against treating godliness as a means of financial gain: “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” — 1 Timothy 6:6

The world tells us that more money and possessions will make us happier. But our possessions cannot provide lasting security or satisfaction. Christ is our treasure. Contentment does not mean we cannot work hard, save, or pursue legitimate opportunities. It means we refuse to make material things the source of our identity and security.

Application:
*Thank God for what you have.
*Resist comparing yourself with others.
*Examine whether the desire for more is replacing trust in God.
*Remember that Christ is worth more than anything this world offers.

Contentment is knowing that because we have Christ, we have what ultimately matters.

(3) Flee and Pursue — v. 11

Paul tells Timothy: “Flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” Christian discipleship involves both fleeing and pursuing. We flee greed, pride, false teaching, and the love of money. But we actively pursue Christlike character. Flee what dishonours Christ. Pursue what reflects Christ.

Application:
*Flee habits and situations that draw you toward sin.
*Pursue righteousness and godliness through God's Word and prayer.
*Grow in faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.

(4) Hope in God and Focus on Good Works — vv. 17–19

Paul instructs wealthy believers not to be proud or place their hope in riches, because wealth is uncertain. Instead, they should hope in God, who generously provides for us. Wealth is also a stewardship. Believers are to be:

*Rich in good works
*Generous
*Ready to share

The question is not merely, “How much do I have?” but, “What am I doing with what God has entrusted to me?” Our resources can become instruments of worship when we use them to bless others, meet needs, support gospel ministry, and advance God's kingdom. The Christian goal is not simply to become rich in possessions, but to become rich in good works.

(5) Avoid Irreverent Babble and Contradictions — v. 20

Paul tells Timothy: “Guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called ‘knowledge.’” We have been entrusted with the truth of the gospel, so we must guard it carefully. Not every argument deserves our attention. Not every claim called “knowledge” is true.

Application:
*Know Scripture so you can recognize error.
*Be careful about what you consume online.
*Don't be drawn into every theological controversy.
*Speak truth with humility and love.
*Guard the gospel entrusted to you.

Conclusion: A Life That Treasures Christ

1 Timothy 6 calls us to:
*Respect others and serve excellently.
*Be content because Christ is enough.
*Flee sin and pursue godliness.
*Use wealth for God's glory and become rich in good works.
*Guard the truth and avoid empty arguments.

If our hope is in money, we will never have enough. If our identity is in position or possessions, we will always fear losing them. But if Christ is our treasure, we can work faithfully, live contentedly, give generously, and remain steadfast even when circumstances change.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You have given us everything we ultimately need in Christ. Teach us to be content, faithful in our work, respectful toward others, and generous with what You have entrusted to us. Help us flee sin and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. Guard us from the love of money and from placing our hope in earthly possessions. Make us rich in good works and ready to share. Help us guard the truth of the gospel and avoid empty arguments. May our lives show that our greatest treasure is Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

《提摩太前书》第6章呼吁信徒在工作、待人、理财和捍卫真理方面活出福音。

(1) 表示尊重，尽心服侍——第1–2节

保罗首先谈到了职场人际关系。基督徒被呼召要尊荣掌权者，并忠心服侍。我们的工作是尊荣基督的机会。即使无人监督，无论是否喜欢上司，我们都应当尽心工作。卓越是忠心的体现。

应用：
*尊荣神所设立的掌权者。
*即使工作看似平凡，也要勤勉尽责。
*让你的行为彰显福音。
*谨记你最终是服侍基督。

问题：如果有人观察我的工作方式，他们能否从中看到我对基督的信仰？

(2) 因有基督而知足——第3–10节

保罗告诫我们，不要把敬虔当作谋取财利的手段：“其实敬虔而又知足，就是得大利的途径。”——提摩太前书 6:6

世人告诉我们，更多的金钱和财物会让我们更快乐。但我们的财物无法带来持久的安全感或满足感。基督才是我们的珍宝。知足并不意味着我们不能努力工作、储蓄或追求正当的机会。它意味着我们拒绝将物质事物视为我们身份认同和安全感的来源。

应用：
*为所拥有的感谢神。
*不要与他人比较。
*反省一下，对“更多”的渴望是否正在取代对神的信靠。
*要记住，基督比这世界所能提供的一切都更有价值。

知足，就是明白：因为我们有基督，我们就拥有了最终真正重要的东西。

(3) 逃避与追求——第11节

保罗对提摩太说：“要逃避这些事，追求公义、敬虔、信心、爱心、忍耐、温柔。”基督徒的门徒生活既包括逃避，也包括追求。我们要远离贪婪、骄傲、异端教义和贪爱钱财。但我们要积极追求像基督一样的品格。远离一切羞辱基督的事，追求一切彰显基督的事。

应用：
*远离那些引诱你犯罪的习惯和处境。
*通过神的话语和祷告，追求公义和敬虔。
*在信心、爱心、恒心和温柔上不断成长。

(4) 仰望神，专注于善行 —— 第17–19节

保罗教导有钱的信徒不要自高自大，也不要把希望寄托在财富上，因为财富是不确定的。相反，他们应当仰望神，因祂慷慨地供应我们。财富也是一种托付。信徒应当：

*善行丰盛
*慷慨
*乐于分享

问题不仅仅在于“我有多少”，而在于“我如何运用神托付给我的东西？”当我们用这些资源来祝福他人、满足需求、支持福音事工并推进神的国度时，它们就能成为敬拜的工具。基督徒的目标不仅仅是拥有丰富的财物，而是行善丰盛。

(5) 远离亵渎的空谈和矛盾——第20节

保罗对提摩太说：“你要保守所交托你的，避免世俗的空谈和冒称是知识的那种反调。” 我们受托保管福音的真理，因此必须谨慎守护。并非每一种论点都值得我们关注，并非所有被称为“知识”的说法都是真实的。

应用：
*熟知圣经，以便辨别谬误。
*谨慎选择网络内容。
*不要被每场神学争议所牵扯。
*以谦卑和爱心说出真理。
*守护托付给你的福音。

结论：珍视基督的生命
《提摩太前书》第六章呼吁我们：
*尊重他人，竭诚服侍。
*因基督已足够而知足。
*远离罪恶，追求敬虔。
*用财富荣耀神，并在善行上富足。
*捍卫真理，避免无谓的争论。

如果我们的希望寄托在金钱上，我们永远不会感到满足。如果我们的身份认同源于地位或财产，我们就会时刻担心失去它们。但如果基督是我们的珍宝，我们就能忠心工作、知足常乐、慷慨施予，即使环境发生变化，也能坚定不移。

祷告

天父，感谢祢在基督里赐给我们一切我们真正所需。求祢教导我们知足常乐，在工作中忠心耿耿，尊重他人，并慷慨地使用祢所托付给我们的。求祢帮助我们远离罪恶，追求公义、敬虔、信心、爱心、恒心和温柔。求祢保守我们不贪爱钱财，不将盼望寄托在世上的财物上。求祢使我们行善丰盛，乐于分享。求祢帮助我们捍卫福音的真理，远离无益的争辩。愿我们的生命彰显出，我们最大的珍宝就是耶稣基督。奉耶稣的名祷告，阿们。
