MEDITATION: In the valley of dry bones passage, the LORD envisioned the day when the "very dry" bones would, once again, have sinews, flesh and skin (Ezek 37:5-6).
Occurring after the promise of "a new heart, and a new spirit" (Ezek 36:26), the exiles in despair listening to this prophecy would wonder if it applied to them nationally or personally, or both.
Perspective 1: "These bones are the whole house of Israel" (Ezek 37:11) and this vision would thus speak of their restoration "into the land of Israel" sometime in the future (Ezek 37:12,14). There was hope for the nation, the "slain" (Ezek 37:9).
Perspective 2: "I will open your graves and raise you from your graves" (Ezek 37:12) hinted of future resurrection of the individual, in addition to national rescue out of Babylon.
Where there is "breath"/"spirit" (Ezek 37:5,9,10,14), there would be life. One day, "My servant David shall be king over them" (Ezek 37:24).
APPLICATION: Look back at history, the valley of dry bones had indeed come alive. Trust the LORD God to restore His people through His Spirit, where prince David "my servant" (Ezek 37:25) would rule and shepherd them. Under this ideal, they would not fall into idolatry anymore (Ezek 37:23). May these positives overpower the negativities in our lives today.
http://m.bbintl.org/bible/ncv/eze/37/
