"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life." — John 6:63 (ESV)

(1) The Spirit Gives Life, Not the Flesh

Jesus contrasts the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit with the flesh. The flesh represents human effort, understanding, and reliance on worldly systems. It is futile in bringing about true life. No matter how much we try to earn or merit life through our own actions, we fall short. Jesus teaches that life—true spiritual life—is not something we can manufacture or achieve on our own. The Spirit gives life. This is a key aspect of the Gospel Alive theme: the Gospel is not just a set of teachings or moral rules; it is the living presence of the Holy Spirit within us that transforms us.

When we hear and receive the words of Jesus, it is the Holy Spirit who opens our hearts and gives us the ability to truly believe and live out that Gospel. The Spirit empowers us to live a life of victory over sin, to grow in Christlikeness, and to be active participants in God’s kingdom.

(2) The Words of Jesus Are Spirit and Life

When Jesus speaks of His words being spirit and life, He is revealing the divine and transformative nature of His message. The Gospel is not a static or just a past event—it is alive because the words of Jesus are infused with divine power. When we read the Scriptures, we are not merely reading an ancient text; we are encountering the living Word of God that continues to speak to us and transform us today.

(3) The Call to Respond: Belief and Abiding

The life Jesus offers is not a one-off thing. There is a constant call to believe and abide. In the verses that follow John 6:63, Jesus continues to explain the necessity of believing in Him to have eternal life (John 6:47-51). To experience the Gospel as truly alive in our lives, we must continually believe in Jesus and allow His words to shape our lives. The Gospel is a living, ongoing experience of growing in faith, relying on the Spirit, and being transformed by His power.

This requires us to stay connected to Jesus, like branches to the vine (John 15:5). Just as we depend on physical food for survival, we must continually feed on Jesus and His words to experience the fullness of life He offers.

(4) The Gospel Alive in Us: Empowered by the Spirit

Jesus' words are not just to be understood intellectually; they are to be received and lived out by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel Alive is about the active presence of the Holy Spirit in us, enabling us to obey, to love, and to reflect Christ to the world.

The Holy Spirit takes the words of Jesus and makes them come alive in our hearts. He teaches us, reminds us, convicts us, empowers us to live for God. The Gospel, when received by faith, is alive because it is continually working in us to make us more like Christ. This is what makes the Gospel powerful—it is not just an idea or philosophy, but a living force that changes hearts, transforms lives, and builds the Kingdom of God.

(5) A Life of Abundance and Purpose

Jesus came so that we might have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10). The Gospel Alive is not only about eternal life but also about living an abundant life now. The life Jesus gives is full—it’s a life marked by purpose, peace, joy, and the power to overcome obstacles. Even in hardship, the living Gospel empowers us to persevere, knowing that we have been made alive in Christ and are part of His eternal Kingdom.

Reflection and Response

(a) Have I experienced the life-giving power of Jesus' words in my own life? Take time to reflect on how the Holy Spirit has used Scripture to speak to you personally. How has the Gospel Alive transformed you?

(b) Am I depending on my own strength or the Spirit to live out my faith? Jesus teaches that the flesh profits nothing. Are you relying on your own efforts, or are you surrendering to the Holy Spirit for empowerment and transformation?

(c) What areas of my life need the Gospel to come alive in a deeper way? Is there an area where you need to experience God's transformative power more deeply? Bring it before God in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to work in you.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life through Your Son, Jesus. Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, empowering us to live out the words of Jesus. May Your Gospel continue to come alive in us, transforming us day by day. Help us to abide in You, to live by Your Spirit, and to share the life-giving message of the Gospel with others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
