Free reusable test kit for Christian maturity. The tongue is a good test kit because it is so powerful, hard to control and frequently reveals the condition of one's heart accurately.
What we say is a measure of our maturity. Words have power, a double edged sword, for both good or evil. From the tongue (and the words that come out of it), it provides a window for others to peek into the condition of the hidden heart. Defilement occurs when we fail to reign in the tongue.
James 3 examines the work/function of the tongue. The tongue is a small organ (Jam 3:5) but consider this :-
(1) It "makes great boasts" (Jam 3:5).
(2) It can create vast destructions like a forest fire (Jam 3:6).
(3) It is a "restless evil, full of deadly poison" (Jam 3:8).
(4) It can be a source of curse (Jam 3:9) even though the same tongue is used to praise our Lord.
James 3 then continues with two types of wisdom in Jam 3:13-18:
Type 1. The kind that is shown by "good life", "deeds done in humility", "pure", "peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere" (Jam 3:13-18).
Type 2. The other kind that is characterised by the habouring of "bitter envy and selfish ambitions", boastful, denies "the truth", "earthly, unspiritual, demonic" (Jam 3:14-16) resulting in "disorder and every evil practice".
REFLECTION (1): Am I a "peacemaker" who is inclined to sow in peace (Jam 3:18)?
REFLECTION (2): Ask someone close to you, "Does my life exhibit more of "Type 1" or "Type 2" wisdom?
