Our spiritual “heart” might feel dead once in a while. How do we get a new heart and be refreshed? When Ezekiel 36:26–27 promises a new heart and a new spirit, how do we receive it? Let’s unpack this big promise.

Ezekiel 36:26–27: “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

The promise in this passage is one of the most beautiful pictures of the Gospel in the Old Testament. God speaks to a people who had repeatedly turned away from Him. Their hearts had become hardened—unresponsive to God’s voice and resistant to His ways. Yet instead of abandoning them, God promises something radical: a new heart and a new spirit.

This is the essence of the Gospel. The good news is not merely that God gives us better instructions or moral improvement. The Gospel is that God gives us new life from within. Where there was once a heart of stone—cold, resistant, and spiritually dead—God replaces it with a heart of flesh, alive and responsive to Him.

This transformation is not something we accomplish through our own effort. Notice how many times God says, “I will.”

  • I will give you a new heart.
  • I will put my Spirit within you.
  • I will cause you to walk in my statutes.

The initiative belongs entirely to God. The Gospel is God acting to rescue and renew His people. Through Jesus Christ, this promise becomes reality. When we trust in Him, God’s Spirit comes to dwell within us. The Spirit awakens our hearts, reshapes our desires, and empowers us to live in ways that reflect God’s character. Obedience becomes not a burden imposed from the outside, but a response flowing from a heart made alive by God.

This is what it means for the Gospel to be alive. It is not simply a message to believe; it is the living work of God transforming us day by day. The same God who promised a new heart is still giving new life today.

Perhaps you feel the weight of your own limitations—habits you cannot seem to break, attitudes that resist change, or a heart that feels spiritually dull. Ezekiel reminds us that our hope does not rest in our ability to fix ourselves. Our hope rests in a God who creates new hearts. The Gospel is alive because God is still doing what He promised: replacing stone with flesh, giving His Spirit, and bringing His people to life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father. We come before You with humble hearts, grateful for Your mercy and grace. Thank You for the promise that You will give us a new heart and put a new spirit within us. Where our hearts have grown hard, soften us by Your love. Where we have been resistant to Your ways, renew us by Your Spirit.

Father, we confess that we cannot change ourselves. Only You can remove the heart of stone and give us a heart that is alive to You. Through the good news of Jesus Christ, breathe new life into us. Let Your Spirit dwell richly within us, transforming our desires, renewing our minds, and guiding our steps.

Make the Gospel alive in us today. Let it shape the way we think, speak, and live. Help us to walk in Your ways—not out of duty alone, but from hearts that love You and delight in Your will. Fill us with Your Spirit so that our lives may reflect Your grace to the world around us. May others see the work You have done in us and be drawn to Your goodness.

We entrust ourselves to You, our faithful Father. Continue Your work in us, renewing us day by day, until our lives fully reflect the new heart You have given. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
