Scripture Focus: John 2:23–25
[23] Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. [24] But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people [25] and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. (ESV)
At the Passover in Jerusalem, crowds gathered around Jesus. They saw His signs—miracles that displayed undeniable power—and many believed in His name. On the surface, this looks like success. People were impressed. The movement was growing. Faith seemed to be spreading.
Yet John gives us a sobering insight: Jesus did not entrust Himself to them. Why? Because He knew what was in man.
(1) Belief That Is Impressed vs. Faith That Is Transformed
The people believed because of what they saw. Their faith was rooted in signs, not surrender. They were amazed, but not necessarily changed. Jesus could see the difference between outward enthusiasm and inward repentance. This passage challenges us to ask:
(a) Do I follow Jesus because He amazes me?
(b) Or because I trust Him as Lord?
True faith is not just admiration for Jesus’ power—it is dependence on His grace.
(2) Jesus Sees the Heart Clearly
Verse 25 reminds us that Jesus does not need human testimony. He already knows us completely. He knows our motives, our doubts, our hidden sins, and even our mixed intentions when we come to Him.
That can feel unsettling—but it is also deeply comforting.
Jesus does not love a version of you that pretends to be strong or faithful—the only side seen by others around you. He loves the real you. He calls you to honesty, not performance.
(3) A Warning and an Invitation
This passage warns us against shallow faith—but it also invites us into something deeper. Jesus does not entrust Himself to superficial belief, but He does entrust Himself fully to humble, repentant hearts.
Later in the Gospel, we will see Jesus give Himself completely—on the cross—for people He knew fully. He knew what was in man, and He went to the cross anyway.
(4) Living This Out
(a) Examine your faith: Is it rooted in who Jesus is, or only in what He does?
(b) Come honestly to Christ: He already knows your heart—bring it to Him.
(c) Trust His wisdom: Jesus knows when faith is real, and He nurtures it patiently.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You know what is in my heart better than I do. Forgive me for times when my faith is shallow or driven by what I want from You. Create in me a sincere, trusting heart. Help me to follow You not just for Your power, but for Your truth and grace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

逾越节期间，耶路撒冷聚集了大批人群。他们目睹了耶稣的神迹——彰显无可辩驳能力的奇事——许多人因此信了他的名。表面看来，这似乎是成功的标志：人们深受震撼，运动规模不断扩大，信仰似乎正在蔓延。
然而约翰向我们揭示了令人警醒的真相：耶稣并未将自己交托给他们。为何？因为他深知人心。
(1) 受感动的信与被改变的信
众人因所见而信。他们的信心根基在于神迹，而非全然顺服。他们惊叹不已，却未必真正改变。耶稣能分辨外在的热忱与内在的悔改。这段经文挑战我们自省：
(a) 我跟随耶稣，是因为祂令我惊叹？
(b) 还是因我信靠祂为主？
真实的信心不仅是钦佩耶稣的大能，更是全然倚靠祂的恩典。
(2) 耶稣洞察人心
第25节提醒我们，耶稣并不需要人的见证。祂早已完全洞悉我们——我们的动机、疑虑、隐藏的罪，甚至当我们来到祂面前时那些杂乱无章的心思意念。
这或许令人不安，却也带来深沉的安慰。
耶稣所爱的并非你伪装坚强或虔诚的模样——那只是世人眼中的表象。祂爱真实的你，呼召你活出诚实而非表演。
(3) 警醒与邀请
这段经文警示我们警惕肤浅的信仰，同时邀请我们进入更深的境界。耶稣不将自己托付给表面信仰，却全然托付给谦卑悔改的心。
福音书后文将见证耶稣在十字架上全然献身——为那些祂全然了解的人。祂洞悉人心，却仍甘愿赴死。
(4) 实践要义
(a) 省察你的信心：根基在于耶稣的本质，还是仅止于祂的作为？
(b) 诚然来到基督面前：祂早已洞悉你心——将心交托于祂。
(c) 信靠祂的智慧：耶稣明辨真实信心，并以恒久忍耐滋养它。
祷告：主耶稣，祢比我更深知我心。求祢赦免我信心浅薄之时，以及因私欲驱使而信靠祢的时刻。求祢在我心中塑造真诚信靠的心，使我跟随祢不仅为得祢的大能，更是为祢的真理与恩典。奉耶稣的名求。阿们。
