This chapter was designed to be heart-stirring, biblically faithful, and relevant for believers seeking encouragement and challenge in their walk with Christ.

Scripture: Jeremiah 45:5 — “And do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not…”

Devotional:
Baruch, the faithful scribe of the prophet Jeremiah, had a hard job. He wrote the words of warning and judgment from Jeremiah, delivered them to a stubborn nation, and witnessed a people in rebellion against God. At some point, Baruch felt overwhelmed. He had hoped for more—perhaps recognition, safety, or significance. Instead, he got rejection, fear, and sorrow.

In Jeremiah 45, God speaks directly to Baruch’s discouragement.

“You said, ‘Woe is me! For the Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.’” (v.3)

God doesn’t rebuke Baruch for his feelings. He acknowledges them—but then redirects his focus:

“And do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not.” (v.5)

That’s a word for us today.

We live in a world that tells us to make something big of ourselves—to gain followers, leave a legacy, be known. But sometimes God calls us to be faithful in the shadows. Baruch’s name is only mentioned a handful of times in Scripture. He didn’t start a revival. He didn’t become a national hero. He was just faithful—and that was enough.

God promised Baruch something greater than greatness: his life (v.5). In a time of war and judgment, Baruch would survive because he had aligned himself with God’s purposes, not his own ambitions.

Reflection:
Are you discouraged because life hasn’t gone the way you dreamed? Are you quietly serving, feeling unnoticed? God sees. He remembers. He honours quiet obedience.

Seek not great things for yourself—seek the kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33)

Prayer:
Lord, when I feel discouraged by how small my life seems, remind me that you see the hidden things. Teach me to seek your glory over my own greatness. Help me be faithful, even when it feels like no one notices. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
