In John 3, we see a unique convergence of three influential teachers in the context of the gospel. Each one—Nicodemus, Jesus, and John the Baptist—brings a distinct perspective to the conversation about the kingdom of God, salvation, and the new birth. Together, they paint a powerful picture of the gospel and the transformative power of Jesus Christ. Let's dive deeper into what happens when these three teachers meet.
(1) Nicodemus: The Teacher in Confusion (John 3:10)
Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council, was a respected teacher of the law. He came to Jesus at night, seeking to understand more about His teachings. Nicodemus represents those who, though knowledgeable in religious matters, are still in search of truth and understanding. Jesus, in His response, gently rebukes him:
"Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?" (John 3:10, ESV).
Here, Jesus points out that even a well-learned man like Nicodemus is missing the deeper spiritual truth. Nicodemus' confusion about the concept of being "born again" highlights the difficulty of grasping spiritual truth without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Despite his position, he needed to be taught a new way of understanding God's work in the world.
(2) Jesus: The Teacher of Truth and Life (John 3:2)
Jesus is the central teacher in this passage. Nicodemus recognizes that Jesus is not just an ordinary teacher: “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God. For no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” (John 3:2, ESV).
Jesus, the Teacher of all teachers, reveals that the new birth is not about religious works, knowledge, or tradition. It is about a radical transformation that comes through the Holy Spirit. (John 3:5). Jesus is showing Nicodemus that salvation is not achieved by human effort but by the divine intervention of God through the Spirit. This is the gospel message: salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
(3) John the Baptist: The Humble Teacher (John 3:26)
In the background, John the Baptist also teaches, but his role is not to point to himself. When his disciples come to him, concerned about the growing popularity of Jesus, John the Baptist responds with humility and clarity: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30, ESV).
John the Baptist’s ministry was always focused on preparing the way for Christ. He humbly points others to Jesus, acknowledging that Jesus is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and bring the true salvation (John 3:34, ESV).
John is a teacher who understands that his purpose is to direct people to Christ, not to build his own following. His selflessness and devotion to Christ remind us that true teaching in the gospel is not about gaining fame or recognition, but about pointing others to Jesus.
As we continue to grow in our faith, let’s embrace the lessons from these three teachers: (a) Seek understanding in Christ. (b) Teach others the truth of the gospel. (c) Live humbly, pointing all glory to Jesus.
Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Nicodemus, John the Baptist, and Jesus. Help us to understand the deep truths of the gospel and to share them humbly with others. May we decrease, so that You may increase in our lives. Thank You for the gift of salvation through Your death and resurrection. Guide us as we seek to live out the gospel in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
