QT 05/03/2025 Wed. Isaiah 18. Insurance with God?
READ http://www.esvbible.org/isaiah18
With the "Ah" of 18:1, the prophet calls for readers' attention to what God would do again as readers attempt to get the insurance and assurances of the good life without God's participation.
The text now turns southward to Cush, a likely area south of Egypt in Africa. "Messengers" of Isaiah's time, like ambassadors of today, scuttle between political powers of all types and sizes in an attempt to secure national interests and other interests.
REFLECTION: Do you feel that God sits idly by when bad things happen to His people and ministry? What do we do when we reach some of these doldrums in life?
Isaiah 18:4–6
[4] For thus the LORD said to me:
“I will quietly look from my dwelling
like clear heat in sunshine,
like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
[5] For before the harvest, when the blossom is over,
and the flower becomes a ripening grape,
he cuts off the shoots with pruning hooks,
and the spreading branches he lops off and clears away.
[6] They shall all of them be left
to the birds of prey of the mountains
and to the beasts of the earth.
And the birds of prey will summer on them,
and all the beasts of the earth will winter on them. (ESV)
The text assures readers that God is not silent, but is looking quietly from His dwelling (18:4). God's superintendence might at times be quiet and unassuming, like dew in the clouds and the heat that ripens (18:4). Slowly but surely, God is moving things forward according to His will.
REFLECTION: Can you recall the last time when you look back at your own history or world history, you see the unmistakable hand of God in that? Can your assurance of all things good include that invisible and visible hand of God?
Isaiah 18:7
[7] At that time tribute will be brought to the LORD of hosts
from a people tall and smooth,
from a people feared near and far,
a nation mighty and conquering,
whose land the rivers divide,
to Mount Zion, the place of the name of the LORD of hosts. (ESV)
"At that time" comforts readers of the inevitability of the nations coming to the LORD of hosts for worship. The fact that these worshippers would be formidable in many areas would not prevent them from worshipping God. With these assurances in view, would we give God our thanks and sincere worship this week?
