It was difficult for Isaiah's audience still in exile on the other side of the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia to believe the promises of Isaiah 60. Like us today, the glowing promises of eternal life and the future of God's people in eternity might still seem quite far away.

But Isaiah reminded his audience that the feelings of "forsaken" and "desolate" (62:4) would now be replaced with "delight" and all things good associated with family and marriage (62:4–5).

APPLICATION: While eternity is still far away, believers and worshippers of The LORD can still pay attention to the little and often over-looked details of what's happening around us—you might still see the evidence of The LORD replacing the negative things of life with various thanksgiving items that lead to rejoicing and praise.

The second replacement for their glorious future points to foreigners' role. The idea of "foreigner" during Isaiah's time points to someone who has vastly different belief systems and gods compared to Isaiah's people. Food and festivals differed greatly too. The sticking point was that foreigners during Isaiah's time were inevitably connected with invasion and confiscation of assets, even religious artefacts, as tokens of their victory of Isaiah's contemporaries.

However, one day will come when foreigners will not pilfer from Isaiah's people (62:8) but will instead allow worshippers of the LORD to eat what they sow and drink what they had laboured greatly for (62:9). Since it was too difficult for Isaiah's audience to believe this good future in view of the predicament then, Isaiah revealed that his message would come to pass because "The LORD has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm" (62:8a).

Isaiah 62:10–11
[10] Go through, go through the gates; prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway; clear it of stones; lift up a signal over the peoples. [11] Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.” (ESV)

Thirdly, the prophet called for active faith from the audience (62:10–12), which concluded Isaiah 60–62. The text revealed to the audience their potential in God's eyes. Spiritual maturity keeps our potential in mind and also keeps working hard towards that potential because God's promises of the fulfillment of His word are true and true.

APPLICATION: Persevere in your faith towards God because His words are true and, by faith, the faithful would experience the fulfillment of God's Word now and even more of it in that glorious future that God had prepared.
