What if the most important news in history came first… to the people no one expected?
An empty tomb. A risen King. And disciples who still didn’t believe it was real. Luke 24 shows us a world turned upside down—by resurrection.
The chapter looks at the Upside-Down Victory of the Resurrection. Luke 24 opens into the shock of resurrection morning—where grief is interrupted by angels, confusion is met with Scripture, and fear is transformed into worship. In Luke’s telling, the kingdom of God continues to overturn human expectations: the last become first, the overlooked become witnesses, and the risen Christ reshapes reality itself.
(1) The First Witnesses: The Unexpected Messengers (Luke 24:1–12)
One of the most striking features of Luke’s resurrection account is that the first witnesses were women. In the cultural world of the time, their testimony was often undervalued, yet God entrusts them with the most important announcement in history.
What humans might dismiss, God exalts. The resurrection does not begin in a palace or a council chamber, but in the testimony of faithful women who encounter the empty tomb.
👉 Devotional Insight: God’s kingdom does not operate on human status systems. The resurrection itself is first announced through those the world might overlook—because in Christ, dignity is not earned by position but given by grace.
(2) Open Eyes, Open Scriptures (Luke 24:27, 31)
On the road to Emmaus, Jesus explains the Scriptures, showing that Moses and the Prophets pointed toward His suffering and glory. Yet even with the clearest teaching, the disciples still do not recognise Him—until “their eyes were opened” (24:31). This reveals a vital truth: Scripture is necessary, but spiritual sight is a gift from God.
👉 Devotional Insight: We may read truth, hear truth, and still miss Christ—unless God opens our eyes. Understanding Jesus is not merely intellectual; it is spiritual illumination. We are to humble ourselves before God’s Scripture and the Holy Spirit’s guidance and teaching for further spiritual growth.
(3) The Shocking Reality of Resurrection (Luke 24:37)
Even after Jesus had foretold His resurrection, the disciples are startled and frightened when He appears. Their reaction shows how difficult it is for human expectation to accept divine reality. The resurrection is not merely “expected fulfillment”—it is overwhelming interruption. It does not fit neatly into their categories of possibility.
👉 Devotional Insight: God often fulfills His promises in ways that still surprise those who believe them. Faith must learn not only to wait for God’s word—but also to recognise it when it arrives in unexpected form.
(4) The Eating Christ: A Physical Resurrection (Luke 24:42–43)
Jesus eats broiled fish in the presence of His disciples. This simple meal becomes a profound theological statement: He is not a spirit, illusion, or memory—He is bodily risen. The resurrection is not escape from creation, but the redemption of it.
👉 Devotional Insight: The risen Christ has a real body, pointing forward to the believer’s future hope: not disembodied existence, but resurrection life—physical, restored, and glorified.
(5) The Ascended Christ and the Living Hope (Luke 24:50–53)
Luke ends his Gospel not with sorrow but with worship. Jesus blesses His disciples and is carried into heaven, and they respond with joy and continual praise. The story does not end with absence but with expectation: He will come again.
👉 Devotional Insight: The ascension does not remove Jesus from His people—it reigns Him over them. The same Christ who rose will return, and His kingdom will be fully revealed.
Reflection
Luke 24 reveals a transformed world:
- The overlooked become the first witnesses
- Blind hearts are given sight
- Fear is replaced with joy
- Death is defeated by bodily resurrection
- Departure becomes hope of return
The resurrection is not just an event to believe—it is a new reality to live in.
Prayer
Risen Lord Jesus, You conquered the grave and revealed Yourself to those who did not expect You. Open my eyes to see You in Your Word, strengthen my faith when I am afraid, and anchor my hope in Your living presence. Teach me to live in the joy of resurrection and the expectation of Your return. Dear Heavenly Father, we praise you for your glorious plans to redeem humanity. Guide my future in the best way can, with the best plans for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
