The readers of Hebrews are in danger of giving up on their Christian faith, tempted to return to their former religion due to problems encountered and the sacrifices required of them.

But the writer exhorts them not to give up on this high priest, Jesus Christ, who was also appointed by God (Heb 5:5-6). Stand firm, because Jesus is "a priest forever" (Heb 5:6). The permanence of Jesus' priesthood demands our permanent allegiance.

Jesus understands you, because He himself also endured tough decision making in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt 26:36, Mark 14:32) - the struggle to obey God and go to the cross.

APPLICATION (1): Cry out to Jesus Christ and pour out to Him our sorrows, our confessions and our cry for help. He is qualified, able and capable to understand and help.

APPLICATION (2): Choose to follow Christ because He "learned obedience through what he sufferred" (Heb 5:8). Be prepared that the path of obedience contains suffering.

The writer also warns against the failure to progress in our Christian faith. He had expected the readers to be "teachers" already (Heb 5:12), but they still need remedial lessons on the basics instead. They should be taking "solid food" but are still on milk (Heb 5:12). Metaphorically speaking, their stomach still cannot digest solid food.

APPLICATION (3): Go on to maturity! Frequent use and practice of God's Word result in better skills to distinguish "good from evil" (Heb 5:14). Let's delve into God's Word and constantly live it out. It's the best way forward.

http://m.bbintl.org/bible/ncv/Heb/5/
