The Thessalonians were reminded that the day of the Lord would come—but it would be like as a thief in the night. The thief in the night imagery also occur in the Gospels (e.g., Matt 24:36–43; Luke 12:35–40) as well as in 2Peter 3:10 and Rev 3:3 and 16:15.
Readers are reminded in all these Scriptures to be ready since the timing of that day is unknown. The church should not be surprised because believers were to expect it (5:4).
None would escape. The "day of the LORD" would come at the least expected time (1Thes 5:2-3). Nevertheless, the responses of two groups of people before that event are different.
Children of light should not be DRUNK, because drunkenness belongs to children "of the night or of the darkness" (1Thes 5:5). Therefore, "keep awake and be sober" (1Thes 5:6). The protective "breastplate of faith and love" and the helmet of "the hope of salvation" (1Thes 5:8) would see us through. Do you have them? The children of darkness would behave otherwise.
Demonstrate the ability to appreciate and "respect those who labour among you and are over you in the LORD and admonish you" (1Thes 5:12). This displays our understanding of the value of their work. If you profiled your vocabulary in the past week, were your words those of respect or disrespect?
REFLECTION: There is definitely something which you can say and appreciate your leaders for, if your attitude is right and are bothered to look. It should not take you long to rejoice and pray, because you are instructed to "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1Thes 5:16-18).
REFLECTION: Are you ready for Christ's return?
