Are you aware you are part of one Story that is still unfolding? From Jesus to Us: The Story Continues. It’s the sequel you’re living in. Let’s unpack this.
Luke 1:3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus (ESV, emphasis added).
Acts 1:1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach (ESV, emphasis added).
Reading Luke–Acts as a single, unified narrative (both written by Luke the Evangelist) is crucial because it shows a continuous story: what God began through Jesus in the Gospel of Gospel of Luke is carried forward by the Spirit through the church in Acts of the Apostles. Instead of two separate books, Luke–Acts forms one theological movement:
👉 Jesus’ mission → Spirit-empowered continuation → the church’s mission
(1) Continuity: Jesus’ ministry—the Church’s ministry
In the book of Luke, Jesus proclaims the kingdom of God, heals the sick, delivers the oppressed, welcomes outsiders (poor, women, Gentiles) and teaches and embodies salvation.
In the book of Acts (apostles like Peter the Apostle and Paul the Apostle) preach the same kingdom message, heal and perform signs, extend inclusion to Gentiles and form communities shaped by Jesus’ teaching.
👉 The pattern is deliberate: What Jesus began, the church continues (cf. Acts 1:1).
Reflection: When you wake up in the morning, do you feel your story is over? No! Be involved in the sequel of Jesus’ (and the Apostles’) story of blessings for the nations.
(2) The role of the Holy Spirit
A key link between Luke and Acts is the Holy Spirit: In Luke: the Spirit empowers Jesus (e.g., Luke 4:18). In Acts: the Spirit empowers believers (e.g., Pentecost).
👉 This shows that the church does not replace Jesus—The church participates in Jesus’ ongoing work through the Spirit.
Reflection: The book of Acts could well have been called The Acts of The Holy Spirit, if not Acts of the Apostles. Yet the Holy Spirit seeks to act through those who have been filled with the Spirit. Are you willing to embrace and obey the Spirit?
(3) Repetition of patterns (deliberate parallels)
Luke intentionally mirrors events:
| Luke (Jesus) | Acts (Apostles) |
|---|---|
| Jesus heals | Apostles heal |
| Jesus is rejected | Apostles face persecution |
| Jesus suffers and is vindicated | Apostles suffer but God vindicates |
| Jesus preaches to outsiders | Gospel goes to Gentiles |
👉 This repetition teaches: The life of Jesus becomes the pattern for the life of believers.
Reflection: We do follow celebrities, sportsman or sportswomen for the entertainment or interesting posts and stories on social media. Would you pattern your whole life after Jesus’?
(4) From Israel to the Nations
Luke–Acts traces expansion: Luke: Jesus focuses on Israel but hints at gospel to all the world. Acts: the gospel moves outward: Jerusalem → Judea → Samaria → ends of the earth. A key turning point was the inclusion of Gentiles (Acts 10–11 with Peter).
👉 The message: God’s plan was always global. The church is a missionary community.
Reflection: Once in a while, we hear the argument of why cut the grass of the gardens of others when you have not finished cutting the grass of your own garden? Well, we can never finish harvesting locally. The nations should not wait. Acts 1:8 encourage simultaneous activity from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria to the ends of the earth.
(5) Implications for subsequent believers
Reading Luke–Acts as a whole isn’t just historical—it’s formational. It is a Mission that is ongoing. Believers today continue the same mission: Proclaim the kingdom, serve the marginalised and witness across cultures. Christianity is not just belief—it’s participation in a story still unfolding!
Secondly, we are reminded of the Spirit-empowered living. The same Spirit active in Jesus and Acts is active today. Ministry is not merely human effort. Therefore, dependence on the Spirit is normative, not optional in ministry!
Third, suffering is expected, not exceptional. Jesus suffers and apostles suffer. Faithfulness often leads to opposition. In Luke-Acts, suffering is framed as part of participating in Christ’s mission, not failure.
Lastly, we see radical inclusion. Luke emphasises outsiders. Acts shows barriers breaking (ethnic, social, religious). Note that the church is called to: Cross boundaries, resist exclusivity, embody God’s universal grace. Because the church as a visible continuation of Jesus, not just an institution but living embodiment of Jesus’ work, are you willing to be the demonstration of lifestyle?
Prayer
Dear Father, help us to see and feel the message of Luke and Acts, that Jesus’ work is not finished nor distant, but ongoing. As the church is caught up into God’s unfolding mission, help me be a contributive part of that in my local church. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
