READ http://www.esv.org/eze18

Ezekiel 18 focuses on personal responsibility, God's justice, and the call to repentance.

📖 Scripture: Ezekiel 18:20
[20] The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. (ESV)

🔍 Reflection:

Ezekiel 18 is a powerful reminder that God holds each person accountable for their own choices. The people of Israel were complaining, saying, “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.” (v. 2) In other words, they were blaming their ancestors for their current situation.

But God sets the record straight: He is just, and He deals with each individual based on their own life, not someone else’s. Your past does not have to define your future. The cycle of sin can be broken.

God says clearly: Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? (ESV, v. 23)

This is not just about justice—this is about grace. God does not want anyone to perish. His heart is for repentance, restoration, and life.

🙏 Application:

(1) Personal Responsibility – Are there areas in your life where you’re blaming others instead of taking responsibility? God's call is to own your walk and turn to Him.

(2) Repentance is Always Possible – No matter how far you’ve gone, if you turn from sin, God offers mercy. “Repent and live!” (v. 32)

(3) Don’t Rely on the Past – Being raised in a godly home doesn’t save you. Likewise, coming from a broken past doesn’t doom you. God looks at the choices you make today.

🙌 Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are both just and merciful. Help me to take responsibility for my own life and walk with integrity. Where I’ve gone astray, lead me to repentance. Thank You that in Christ, I am forgiven and free. Let me never presume on Your grace, but walk in daily obedience to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

💡 Challenge:

Take time this week to examine your heart. Is there a habit, sin, or excuse you’ve been holding onto? Lay it at the feet of Jesus. Remember: God delights in showing mercy—but He asks for a heart that’s willing to turn to Him.
