What happens when a church knows the truth—but doesn’t live by it? In Titus chapter 1, Paul shows us what a church shaped by the gospel should look like: faithful leaders, sound doctrine, and godly lives. Let’s discover what that means for us today.

Scripture: Titus 1:1–16
Titus 1 reminds us that the Christian life is not merely about believing the right things—it is about allowing the truth of the gospel to shape the way we live.

Paul begins by identifying himself as a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ. His ministry has a clear purpose: to lead God's people toward faith and godliness grounded in the hope of eternal life (Titus 1:1–2).

(1) The Gospel Produces Godly Lives

Paul connects truth with godliness. Biblical truth is never intended to remain merely intellectual knowledge. When we truly understand the grace of God in Christ, it should transform our character.

The gospel tells us that salvation is God's gracious work through Jesus Christ—not something we earn by our goodness. Yet that grace also calls us to become people who reflect Christ.

Ask yourself:

  • Is my faith producing greater love for God?
  • Am I becoming more honest, patient, humble, and self-controlled?
  • Does my daily life reflect what I say I believe?

Grace saves us, and grace also teaches us to live differently.

(2) Godly Leadership Matters

In verses 5–9, Paul gives Titus qualifications for elders. Notice that many of the qualifications concern character rather than talent.

A church leader must be faithful, self-controlled, hospitable, upright, holy, disciplined, and firmly grounded in God's Word. This reminds us that God's concern for leadership is not primarily, “How impressive is this person?” but “Does this person faithfully reflect Christ?”

The same principle applies to every believer. Whether we lead a church, a family, a workplace, or simply influence the people around us, our character matters.

Our lives are part of our testimony.

(3) Hold Firmly to the Word

Paul says that a leader must hold firmly to the trustworthy message so that he can both encourage believers with sound teaching and refute those who contradict it (Titus 1:9).

We live in a world filled with competing ideas about truth, morality, identity, and salvation. Christians therefore need more than sincerity—we need to be rooted in God's Word.

The gospel must remain at the centre: We are sinners who cannot save ourselves, but God has graciously provided salvation through Jesus Christ. Christ died for our sins, rose again, and calls us to repentance and faith.

Because the gospel is true, we can stand on it with confidence.

(4) Faith Must Be More Than Words

Paul gives a sobering warning in verse 16: “They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works.”

This is one of the great dangers of Christianity: having a profession without transformation. It is possible to know Christian vocabulary, attend church, sing worship songs, and speak about God while our lives consistently contradict what we profess.

Titus 1 calls us to examine ourselves. Does my life confirm my confession? None of us will live perfectly. The gospel does not teach us that Christians never fail. Rather, genuine faith produces repentance, dependence upon Christ, and a growing desire to obey Him.

When we fall, we don't run away from Christ—we run to Christ.

Reflection

Titus 1 gives us a simple challenge: Believe the truth. Hold firmly to the gospel. Let that truth produce godliness in your life. The world does not merely need Christians who can talk about Jesus. It needs Christians whose lives have been transformed by Jesus.

Today, ask God: “Lord, let the truth I believe become visible in the way I live. Make my character increasingly reflect Christ. Keep me faithful to Your Word, humble in repentance, and courageous in proclaiming the gospel.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope of eternal life revealed through Jesus Christ. Thank You that salvation is by Your grace, not our works. Help us to hold firmly to Your Word, discern false teaching, and stand faithfully for the gospel. Make our faith genuine and our lives godly. Where we have failed, lead us to repentance and restore us by Your grace. Give our churches faithful leaders who love Your Word and care for Your people. Help us to live as faithful witnesses of Jesus, so that our words and actions honour the Saviour we profess. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
