Have you ever been in total darkness, whether physically or spiritually, and suddenly had a light shine that changed everything? In life, we experience moments like this spiritually, too. There are times when we feel lost, confused, or even overwhelmed by the darkness around us. In those moments, we need a light that is constant, true, and unshakable.

Scripture: John 1:1-5 (ESV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Reflection:

In John 1:1-5, we step into a powerful revelation of who Jesus is—more than just a man who walked the earth 2,000 years ago. In these verses, John takes us back to the very beginning of time to show us something awe-inspiring and foundational to our faith.

(1) The Eternal Word: "In the beginning was the Word..."

John begins with a statement that connects directly to Genesis 1:1—"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." But John’s focus here is the Word. He’s telling us that Jesus, the Word, was present before creation itself. He was there in the beginning—not just at the start of time but before time began. The One who spoke creation into existence is the One who desires to speak truth, hope, and life into us today.

(2) The Word Was With God, and the Word Was God

These verses make a bold, clear claim about who Jesus is. The Word is not merely a messenger or a created being, but God Himself. The relationship between Jesus and the Father is one of deep unity and intimacy. They were not distant from each other—Jesus, the Word, was with God and was God.

This truth forms the foundation of our understanding of God’s nature. The Trinity—God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is woven into the fabric of the universe. The Word that became flesh (Jesus) is the same Word who was present at creation and who now desires to dwell in us through the Holy Spirit. Think about that for a moment. Jesus is not just a figure in history; He is God with us—present, active, and loving.

(3) All Things Were Made Through Him

This is where the passage speaks of the creative power of the Word. All things—every star, every tree, every human life—were made through Jesus. Nothing in the universe exists apart from Him. Everything was made for Him and by Him.

In a world that often feels chaotic or out of control, these verses remind us that the Creator is sovereign. The same Jesus who made the world is the one who holds it together and has a purpose for every single part of it. This includes you. Your life has a purpose because it was created through Him and for Him.

(4) In Him Was Life, and the Life Was the Light of Men

This is where the passage begins to speak to our hearts deeply. The life that is in Jesus is not just physical life, but spiritual life—a life that is abundant, fulfilling, and eternal. And this life is the light of men. It’s the light that guides us, the light that reveals truth, and the light that overcomes the darkness in our lives.

Jesus didn’t just come to teach us or show us how to live; He came to give us life—real, eternal life. In Him, we find the light we so desperately need.

(5) The Light Shines in the Darkness, and the Darkness Has Not Overcome It

This final verse speaks to the battle between light and darkness that we see throughout Scripture. Darkness represents sin, evil, and ignorance. But the light of Christ shines into this darkness and, the best news of all: the darkness cannot overcome it.

No matter how dark or overwhelming our circumstances may feel, the light of Christ can never be extinguished. Nothing—not sin, not suffering, not the darkness of this world—can overcome the light of Jesus.

Application: Reflect on Jesus as the Light in Your Life. Are there areas of your life that feel dark or overwhelming? Maybe it’s a difficult relationship, a personal struggle, or a season of doubt. In those moments, remember that the light of Jesus shines brightly. His light doesn’t just illuminate your path; it displaces darkness. Trust in His light to guide and comfort you.

Prayer: Dear God, we thank You for revealing Yourself as the eternal Word, the Creator of all things, and the Light of the world. We confess that too often we seek light in the wrong places, only to find that it fades. But we know that Your light is eternal and unshakable. Help us to trust in Your life-giving light in every situation we face. Shine in our hearts, dispel the darkness in our minds, and empower us to live as children of the light. We thank You for the hope that You have overcome the darkness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

阅读 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john 1%3A1-5&version=CNVS
