Choosing the way that leads to life. Matthew 7 brings the Sermon on the Mount to a decisive close. Jesus presses His listeners toward a response. These are not abstract ideals; they demand allegiance. Again and again, Jesus confronts us with a choice.
(1) Reject Hypocritical Judgment (7:1–6)
“Judge not, that you be not judged.” (7:1). At first glance, Jesus’ command seems unrealistic. We evaluate job candidates, discern character in relationships, and even judge whether food is safe to eat. Clearly, Jesus is not forbidding discernment.
What He condemns is hypocritical judgment—the kind that:
(a) Exalts self while condemning others
(b) Exposes others’ sins while ignoring our own
(c) Plays God rather than pointing people to God
Jesus’ image is deliberately absurd: a man with a log in his eye performing eye surgery on someone else. The issue is not seeing sin but seeing self clearly.
Biblical discernment:
(a) Begins with repentance
(b) Is exercised with humility
(c) Aims at restoration, not condemnation
Only after dealing honestly with our own sin are we able to help others rightly. Grace must shape our judgments, or they become destructive rather than redemptive.
(2) Receive the Assurance of the Heavenly Father’s Care (7:7–11)
“Ask…seek…knock.”
Jesus moves from warning to comfort. The God who exposes our hypocrisy is also the Father who welcomes our dependence. Those who live only by sight struggle here. Providence is unseen. Prayer can feel unanswered. Yet Jesus insists: God is better than the best earthly parent.
The promise is not that God grants every desire, but that He gives good gifts—what accords with His wisdom and love. Prayer is not a technique for control; it is an expression of trust. Faith learns to rest in the Father’s goodness even when circumstances remain unclear.
(3) The Golden Rule (7:12)
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
This is not mere ethical advice. Jesus summarizes the entire Old Testament moral vision in one sentence. Love for neighbor flows from love for God. The Golden Rule calls us to proactive, self-giving love—not passive avoidance of harm. It pushes us beyond legal minimums toward Christlike generosity.
(4) Jesus’ Call to Choose Between the “Twos” (7:13–28)
Jesus closes with urgency. Neutrality is not an option.
(a) Two Gates (7:13–14): Wide gate: easy, popular, culturally affirmed—yet leading to destruction. Narrow gate: difficult, costly, countercultural—yet leading to life
(b) Two Trees (7:15–20): Healthy trees bear good fruit. Diseased trees cannot hide their condition forever.
(c) Two Foundations, rock or sand (7:24–26): Hearing Jesus’ words is not enough. Obedience flows from genuine faith. The difference is not perfection but allegiance.
One way of life is shaped by: Self-rule, cultural norms, religious appearance and convenience. The other is shaped by: Obedience to Christ, repentance, humility and trust.
This is not about behavioural modification or moral superiority. It is about who rules your life. The narrow gate is not “try harder.” The narrow gate is “Follow Me.”
Closing Reflection
Matthew 7 leaves us standing at a crossroads. Jesus does not merely inform us—He summons us. Choose the way that leads to life. Choose the foundation that stands.
Choose allegiance to Christ. Because in the end, the question is not whether we heard or read the words of Jesus—but whether we trusted and obeyed Him.

(1) 弃绝伪善的审判(7:1-6)
“不可判断人,免得你们被判断。”(7:1)乍看之下,耶稣的命令似乎不切实际。我们评估求职者、辨别人际关系中的品格,甚至判断食物是否安全可食。显然,耶稣并非禁止明辨是非。
祂谴责的是伪善的审判——即:
(a) 抬高自己却贬低他人
(b) 暴露他人罪孽却忽视自身过错
(c) 扮演上帝而非引导人归向上帝
耶稣的比喻刻意荒诞:眼中带梁木者竟为他人做眼科手术。关键不在于看见罪,而在于看清自己。
合乎圣经的辨别力:
(a) 以悔改为起点
(b) 以谦卑为实践
(c) 目标在于修复而非定罪
唯有诚实地面对自身罪孽,我们才能正确地帮助他人。恩典必须塑造我们的判断,否则判断将沦为毁灭而非救赎。
(2) 领受天父看顾的确据(7:7-11)
“求……找……敲。”
耶稣从警示转向安慰。那位揭露我们虚伪的上帝,也是接纳我们倚靠的父。只凭眼见而活的人在此挣扎。天意不可见,祷告似无回应。但耶稣坚持:上帝胜过世上最完美的父母。
应许并非上帝满足一切欲望,而是赐下美善的礼物——符合祂智慧与慈爱的恩赐。祷告并非操控之术,乃是信心的表达。信徒当学会安息于父神的良善中,纵使处境未明。
(3) 黄金法则(7:12)
“你们愿意人怎样待你们,你们也要怎样待人,这是律法和先知的总纲。”
这绝非简单的伦理建议。耶稣用一句话概括了整个旧约的道德视野。爱邻舍源于爱上帝。黄金法则呼召我们实践主动的、自我奉献的爱——而非被动地避免伤害。它推动我们超越律法最低要求,走向基督般的慷慨。
(4) 耶稣呼召在 “两者之间” 作出选择(7:13-28)
耶稣以紧迫感作结。中立绝非选项。
(a) 两道门(7:13-14):宽门:轻松、受欢迎、受文化认可——却通向毁灭。窄门:艰难、代价高昂、反文化——却通向生命
(b) 两棵树(7:15-20):健康的树结好果子。病树无法永远隐藏其状态。
(c) 两类根基,磐石或沙土(7:24-26):听见耶稣的话语远远不够。真正的信心必结出顺服的果子。区别不在于完美无瑕,而在于效忠对象。
一种生命形态由自我掌控、文化规范、宗教外表与世俗便利塑造;另一种则由顺服基督、悔改、谦卑与信靠塑造。
这无关行为矫正或道德优越,而在于谁主宰你的人生。窄门并非 “更努力尝试” ,窄门是 “跟从我”。
终章沉思
马太福音第七章将我们置于十字路口。耶稣不仅告知我们——更召唤我们。选择通往生命的道路,选择坚固的根基。选择效忠基督。因为最终的考问不在于我们是否听闻或读过耶稣的话语——而在于我们是否信靠并顺服祂。
