📖 Scripture Focus: Jeremiah 23:1–6
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:1, ESV)
Jeremiah 23 begins with a stinging rebuke to the leaders of Judah. God calls them out for their spiritual negligence and corruption. These were shepherds—kings, prophets, and priests—meant to care for God's people. Instead, they led them into danger, idolatry, and confusion.
This judgment is not just about bad governance; it’s about spiritual failure. God takes His role as Shepherd seriously—and He holds accountable those who misuse their authority over His flock.
But the chapter doesn’t end in judgment. There’s hope. In verses 5–6, God promises something greater:
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely...”
This is a prophecy about Jesus Christ—the Righteous Branch. Where earthly shepherds failed, Christ never fails. He is wise, just, and perfectly faithful. His reign brings righteousness, peace, and restoration.
Reflection:
Are there places in your life where human leadership has failed you? Have you ever felt scattered or abandoned by those who should have cared for your soul? Most of us shepherd others or are shepherded by other, or even both of these.
Regardless of the amount of influence we have, let Jeremiah 23 draw your eyes to Jesus, the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), who gathers the lost, heals the broken, and reigns in righteousness. In a world of failing leaders, Jesus is the One who never disappoints.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd and my King. Even when earthly leaders fall short, You remain faithful. Help me to trust in Jesus, the Righteous Branch, and follow Him daily. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
