QT 09/11/2025 Sun. Amos 8 When God Stops Speaking
READ http://www.esv.org/Amos8
📖 Text Focus:
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.” — Amos 8:11
💡 Main Idea:
Amos 8 is a sobering warning: God’s patience with sin is not endless. There comes a time when He no longer warns — He judges. And perhaps the most terrifying judgment is when God stops speaking altogether.
🧱 The Problem in Amos 8
Israel of Amos’ time was prospering economically, but spiritually they were corrupt, indifferent, and unjust. They:
(1) Trampled the needy (v.4)
(2) Practiced dishonest business (v.5)
(3) Worshipped outwardly but with greedy hearts (v.5)
(4) Thought more about profit than holiness
They wanted God’s blessings, but not His voice.
So God shows Amos a vision — a basket of summer fruit (v.1), a sign that Israel was ripe for judgment. Just as overripe fruit quickly rots, so too would Israel’s time run out.
🔇 When God Goes Silent
The most chilling verse is Amos 8:11 — a famine of God’s Word.
Not a lack of food.
Not a lack of water.
A lack of hearing from God.
This is worse than physical hunger. It's a spiritual drought. Imagine a world where no prophet speaks, no Spirit convicts, no Scripture comforts, no word from God is heard. That’s judgment. And it happened — between Malachi and the coming of John the Baptist, there were 400 years of silence.
💬 What This Means for Us
We live in a time of unprecedented access to God’s Word — Scripture in our hands, on our phones, preached, posted, podcasted. But the real question is:
Are we listening?
God’s Word is not something to assume, ignore, or postpone. The people in Amos’ day had grown numb to it — until it was gone. And only then did they realize how desperate they were.
⚠️ Warning and Invitation. This chapter reminds us:
(1) Don’t mistake comfort for God’s approval
(2) Don’t ignore conviction — when God speaks, respond
(3) Don’t assume God’s Word will always be easily heard
Today is the day to listen. To repent. To obey. Because the greatest tragedy is not material loss — it’s spiritual deafness.
🙌 Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the ways I’ve taken Your Word lightly. Keep me from a heart that hears but doesn’t listen. Soften my spirit to receive Your truth — even when it’s hard.
Let me hunger for Your Word, not just when it’s convenient, but every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🔁 Reflect:
(1) Are you actively listening to God’s Word, or passively letting it pass by?
(2) If God’s voice went silent in your life, would you even notice?
(3) Let’s not wait for a famine to realize how much we need God’s Word. Let’s treasure it now.
