The long confession highlights a few points: No matter how rebellious people have been in the past, they can count on God to keep his gracious promises as they turn back to Him. This is because God has shown himself faithful and merciful. God did not give them the total punishment that they deserved, but showed them mercy, a lot of mercy than they deserved. God was right to punish them, yet He rescued them repeatedly whenever they called out to Him again.
Nehemiah's contemporaries sought to end this repeated cycle of sin, repentance, call for help. Most of us would have given up hope on this kind of person. Will this mindless repetition of falling back into sin discontinue?
Jeremiah 31:31–34 The New Covenant
[31] “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, [32] not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. [33] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [34] And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (ESV)
The book of Ezra-Nehemiah, described the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecy. With the remnant of God's people in the land, Jerusalem wall rebuilt, now is the time to focus on the spiritual aspect of their restoration.
REFLECTION: Do we pay attention to the condition of the heart, just as we pay attention to nutrition and cognitive development and financial security, or even more? Is it a heart that has the capacity to confess to God?
When God's laws are proclaimed, is the heart inclined to confess the sin, mourning over it, and have a renewed heart to recommit to God and His laws? New Testament believers can benefit from the laws of God that are written on their hearts by the Holy Spirit.
REFLECTION: Even though Jeremiah prophesied that God will put His laws within His people and write it on their hearts, this does not mean that God's people can do what they wish and still be on the correct side of God's laws. However, this showed that God would do what He could, to prompt and help His people, so that people can still make a decision and willingly return to Him. Are we grateful for this?
PRAYER: Dear God, you have shown us much grace and mercy. Help us to respond with thanksgiving, and avoid all contamination and corrupt that surrounds us. We pray for the rebuilding of our community to be one that delights your heart, as you mould our hearts to be more obedient to you, and delight in you more and more each day!
