We saw in a recent survey that more and more people are embracing that which The LORD has designated as to be avoided. In the midst of various voices and noises, would people of the earth go the way of the LORD or the way of ancient Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 13–19)? Vapes and self-harm inflict further damage on the human body, mind and emotions. How is God’s people going to participate in His plan to rescue and restore humanity?
Scripture: Ezekiel 42 (ESV)
Key Verse: “Then he measured the temple, a hundred cubits long; the yard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long.” (Ezekiel 42:15)
Observation:
Ezekiel 42 might seem, at first glance, like a purely architectural chapter—full of measurements, dimensions, and room descriptions. But as we dig deeper, we see something profound: God cares deeply about holiness, order, and preparation for His presence. The chapter describes the priests' chambers, rooms designated for those who minister before the Lord, and it ends with a powerful statement: “This was the law of the temple: the whole territory on the top of the mountain all around shall be most holy” (Ezek. 43:12, echoing what 42 builds toward).
Interpretation:
God was showing Ezekiel—and us—that His presence demands holiness. The priests had their rooms, their garments, and their responsibilities set apart. Nothing ordinary was to mix with the holy. Even their clothes had to be changed before leaving the inner court (v.14), underscoring that God's holiness isn't casual. It’s not something we approach flippantly.
But we no longer need a physical temple to encounter God—Jesus is our High Priest, and we are now God’s temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). Yet, this passage challenges us: Are we preparing our hearts to be a dwelling place for God? Are we keeping our lives “set apart” for Him?
Application:
(1) Reverence: God is not a buddy to be manipulated—He is holy. Let’s approach Him with reverence, awe, and love.
(2) Purity: Just as the priests had to change garments and prepare, we are called to live lives that reflect God's holiness. Not through legalism, but through the power of the Spirit.
(3) Order: God’s design for the temple was not random. Your life, too, isn’t random. God has a divine order and purpose for you. Trust Him in the details.
Prayer:
Holy God, thank You that through Jesus I can boldly enter Your presence. Help me never to take that lightly. Set me apart for Your glory. Cleanse my heart. Let every part of my life reflect the sacredness of being Your dwelling place. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
