QT 11/04/2025 Fri. Ephesians 4:25–5:2. The New Self and Practising Truth.

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. (ESV)
In view of the fact that "in Christ" the Ephesians have been taught to put off the old man and to put on the new man, Paul urged them to put off and cast away falsehood but speak truth instead. Speaking the truth would be a hallmark of the "New Self" that Paul had been expounding in the previous paragraphs.
APPLICATION: Be consistent with who we are and what we have confessed and committed our lives to. Since we have proclaimed Christ, put away falsehood and practice the truth. The glorious basis for the practice of truth is Jesus’ proclamation that He is the truth.
John 14:6–7 [6] Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. [7] If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (ESV)
Paul’s commands not to sin in anger, labour hard instead of stealing, sharing with others, wholesome talk and not grieving the Holy Spirit are further examples of this lifestyle of the new life in Christ.
REFLECTION: When the self, the “I” and “my” opinion rules, bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander are all not far away. Don’t you agree?
On the other hand, when fellow pilgrims fail to adhere to the required standard of God and do you wrong, Paul exhorted them to use the tender heart to forgive—following Christ’s example.

以弗所书 4:25 所以，你们要除掉谎言，各人要与邻舍说真话，因为我们彼此是肢体。
鉴于以弗所人 "在基督里 "已经接受了脱去旧人、穿上新人的教导，保罗敦促他们摒弃谬论，而要说真话。说真话是 “新我 ”的标志，保罗在前面的段落中已经阐述了这一点。
应用：要与我们的身份以及我们所承认和承诺的生活保持一致。既然我们已经宣扬基督，就应摒弃虚假，实践真理。实践真理的光荣基础是耶稣宣告祂就是真理。
约翰福音 14：6-7 耶稣对他说：“我就是道路、真理、生命，如果不是借着我，没有人能到父那里去。 7 如果你们认识我，就必认识我的父；从今以后，你们认识他，并且看见了他。”
保罗嘱咐我们不要发怒犯罪、勤劳而不是偷窃、与人分享、健康的言语和不要使圣灵忧伤，这些都是基督新生命生活方式的进一步例证。
反思：当自我、“我 ”和 “我的 ”观点主宰一切时，苦毒、忿怒、愤怒、喧哗和诽谤就离我们不远了。你们同意吗？
另一方面，当同行的朝圣者没有遵守上帝要求的标准，做了对不起你的事时，保罗告诫他们要以基督为榜样，用温柔的心去宽恕。
