Jeremiah 1:5–7 [5] “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” [6] Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” [7] But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. (ESV)
Reflection (1): In Jeremiah 1, we see a glorious reminder of God's sovereign choice and intimate knowledge of His people. Despite Jeremiah's young age and feelings of inadequacy, God assures him of His divine purpose and calling. This passage reveals that God's plan for our lives is established before we are even born.
Application (1): Our trust and obedience of God’s plan are made easier if we know that, hey, He knows what He is doing. Remember, God knew much about you, in fact everything, before you were born!
Reflection (2): Jeremiah’s response—"Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth" (Jeremiah 1:6)—mirrors our own moments of doubt and insecurity (and perhaps even our attempts to find a lame excuse to slack). Have you encountered this insecurity or lack of skills recently when called? What was your response?
Application (2): Yet, God's reassurance—"Jeremiah 1:8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD” (ESV)—reminds us that we are never alone when we step out in obedience to His calling. God is with you.
As followers of Christ, we are called to trust in God's plan, even when it seems daunting or beyond our abilities. Like Jeremiah, our significance lies not in our strength but in God's power working through us. Our identity is rooted in God's choosing and setting us apart for His purposes. “I appointed you a prophet to the nations” (1:5b) seemed to tall an order. But with God and His promise of presence for His servants, nothing is impossible.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing me even before I was born. Thank You for calling me to serve You and for the assurance that You are with me. Forgive me for my doubts and fears. Help me to trust in Your plan and to be courageous in obeying Your Word. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit to empower me for the tasks You have prepared. I surrender my life to You today, confident that You who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Encouragement:
Remember, God's calling on your life is rooted in His love and sovereignty. No matter how young or inexperienced you feel, He equips those He calls. Step forward with faith, knowing that the Lord is with you every step of the way. May this devotion inspire you to embrace God's purpose for your life with courage and trust!
