QT 11/11/2025 Tue. Obadiah 1 “Brought Low from the Heights—Raised Up on Mount Zion”
READ http://www.esv.org/obd1
Scripture Focus: Obadiah 1:3–4, 21 (ESV)
“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord.”
“Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion to rule Mount Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.”
Devotion
Edom thought height meant safety. They carved their homes into mountain cliffs, looked down from their fortress city, and felt untouchable. Their altitude fed their attitude—and pride deceived them. They mistook their high position for divine approval, their elevation for security.
But the Lord’s word is unshakable: “From there I will bring you down.” No mountain is too tall for God to reach. No fortress is beyond His grasp. Pride always builds its nest in high places, but God always brings the proud low.
Our world still builds high. We build towers of achievement, prestige, intellect, and independence—yet the higher we climb in our own strength, the farther we fall when pride gives way. Sin always whispers, “Who will bring me down?” But the gospel answers, “The Lord will—so that He might lift you up again in Christ.”
The final verse of Obadiah turns the story upward again. Where Edom’s mountain of pride collapses, Mount Zion rises in glory. “Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion… and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” This points us to Jesus, the true Saviour who ascended—not in pride, but in humility through the cross—to reign forever.
What Edom lost in arrogance, Zion gains in grace. Christ rules where pride once reigned. And one day, every lofty thing that exalts itself against the Lord will be brought low, while every humble heart lifted by His grace will stand secure on His holy mountain.
Reflection & Application
(1) Where have I built “high places” of pride?
Ask the Spirit to reveal any self-reliance or arrogance that keeps you from depending fully on God.
(2) How does the humility of Jesus reshape my view of greatness?
Remember: He stooped lower than anyone—so He could raise us higher than we deserve.
(3) Where am I placing my security?
May it not be in our “mountains,” but in the unshakable kingdom of the Lord.
Prayer
Lord, forgive the pride of my heart that deceives me. Tear down every fortress I’ve built apart from You. Lift me to Mount Zion—not by my strength, but by Your mercy. May Your kingdom come, and may every part of my life declare: “The kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” In Jesus’ name. Amen.
