When we sit down for coffee, what conversational content hogs much of time? Just think about it. The target(s) of your speeches and deeds?
The effects of the core values start and end Isaiah 3. The core values appear at the centre of Isaiah 3:
Isaiah 3:8
[8] For Jerusalem has stumbled,
and Judah has fallen,
because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD,
defying his glorious presence. (ESV)
"For" in 3:8 explains 3:1–7. The nation would collapse if they insist on rebellion. Economic resources would disappear (3:1). Manpower would face shortfalls (3:2–3). The unqualified and immature come into office, signifying both shortfall and chaos (3:4–5). The qualification of being appointed a leader had descended to "you have a cloak; you shall be our leader" (3:6)—the mere possession of a cloak qualifies? (Surely insufficient!) Their present troubles were serious enough. The prophet warned that the present would become permanent woes if they continued without repenting.
Are you able to detect that any attack on students might actually be targeted at the school in question? Any remarks passed about children might actually mask criticisms of their parents. Targeting the painting is actually targeting the painter. Targeting speeches and deeds against the word of Isaiah or other prophets frequently expressed the people's unhappiness with The LORD.
REFLECTION: What are the targets of your speeches and deeds today? If you did an audio recording of your whole day today, what vibes or genre are your speeches?
The actions and accessories further expressed their inner values. Oppression of the poor were widespread (3:14b–15). Haughtiness described their eyes, feet and how they walked (3:16–17). They had luxurious apparels and ample accessories to adorn themselves with (3:18–23). Yet these were actually rottenness, baldness, sackcloth that called for the sword, and the lament and feeling the reality of emptiness instead (3:24–26).
REFLECTION: Since 3:8 spoke of the crucial core message of The LORD and "his glorious presence", how can we season the content of our speeches and deeds towards others, including brothers and sisters, including the bride of Jesus Christ (the church) such that the hearers can both be convicted, renewed and motivated to speak and serve the LORD, even witnessing to the watching world the LORD's glorious presence?
