(1) Placement (10:1–7)

The disciples were called, appointed, and given authority over a demonic- and disease-affected world. In Matthew 10, Jesus sends them on a short-term training mission. This was not merely an outreach trip, but a formative journey designed to shape their trust, obedience, and identity as His representatives.

(2) Pay (10:8–15)

Jesus instructs them not to focus on pay or compensation, or even to carry a “bag for your journey.” They were to receive freely and give freely, trusting that “the laborer deserves his food” (10:10).

What does “no bag for your journey” mean? (Matthew 10:10)
In Jesus’ day, the “bag” (Greek pēra) was a traveler’s pouch—often used by itinerant teachers or beggars to carry extra food, money, or provisions collected along the way. Think of it as a backup supply bag or fundraising satchel. When Jesus tells the Twelve to take “no bag for your journey,” He is not being careless or impractical.

(a) A deliberate discipleship lesson

They were to travel light and depend entirely on God’s provision, not stored resources. “For the laborer deserves his food” points to God’s provision through the hospitality of those who receive the message. Their sustenance would come in the work, not from stockpiles.

(b) A safeguard against profiteering

The pēra was commonly associated with philosophers and religious wanderers who begged for support. By forbidding the bag, Jesus distinguishes His messengers from:

• Professional beggars
• Traveling religious charlatans (pretenders)
• Those who preach for personal gain

(c) Urgency and simplicity

They were not to ask for provision—it would be freely given where the kingdom was received. This short-term training mission was about proclamation, not preparation. No bag, no spare tunic, no extra sandals means:

• Move quickly
• Stay focused
• Trust God completely

(d) Relational dependence, not self-sufficiency

The disciples were to enter homes, accept hospitality, and build relationships. God’s provision comes through people, not isolation. This also tested the hearers: Will they receive the messengers? Will they participate in God’s work by providing for them?

(3) Persecution, Panic, and Peace (10:16–39)

Followers of Jesus must keep the calling in mind, because the message may not be welcomed at all (10:14). Do not waste time on stubborn resistance (10:13, 15), but move on (10:14). The disciples’ self-image flows from their high calling, not from popularity or acceptance.

Persecution is not accidental—it is a permanent feature of mission. Jesus sends His disciples “in the midst of wolves” (10:16). We pray for wisdom in tactics and purity in motives. Therefore:

• Do not panic: “Have no fear of them” (10:26)
• Fear God rightly (10:28–33)

Peace is not something to be preserved at all costs. The message of Jesus sifts and divides, because it confronts deeply held values—values people often defend publicly while masking them in conversation (10:34–39). Allegiance to Christ may disrupt even the closest relationships.

(4) Prize (10:40–42)

Jesus closes by pointing to the reward awaiting those who receive His messengers.

Who are “these little ones”?
They are not primarily children. In context, they refer to Jesus’ disciples—the vulnerable, unknown, low-status followers being sent out with nothing (no bag, no extra tunic). They are “little” in the world’s eyes: dependent, exposed, unimpressive.

Why “a cup of cold water”?
Cold water was common, unheated, inexpensive, and accessible to almost anyone. Jesus chooses the smallest possible act of kindness to make His point: no one is too poor, insignificant, or limited to participate in God’s kingdom work.

Why “because he is a disciple”?
The act is rewarded not merely because it is kind, but because it is done in recognition of allegiance to Jesus. To receive the disciple is to receive the One who sent him (10:40).

Why “he will by no means lose his reward”?
Jesus uses a strong double negative (ou mē, Greek)—never, ever forgotten. The reward is certain, divinely remembered, and ultimately fulfilled in God’s kingdom. God notices what others overlook.

Closing Reflection
Every act of faith-filled kindness toward Christ’s servants—no matter how small—is seen, remembered, and rewarded by God. Placement, Pay, Persecution, Panic, Peace, and Prize. Be clear about what to expect, what to discard, and what to hold on to. Have a good day.

“不要带行囊”有何深意？（马太福音10:10）

在耶稣时代，“行囊”（希腊文 pēra）是旅行者的腰包——常被游行教师或乞丐用来装载沿途收集的额外食物、钱财或补给品。可将其视为备用物资袋或募捐提包。当耶稣嘱咐十二门徒“不要带行囊”时，并非草率或不切实际。

(a) 刻意设计的门徒训练

门徒需轻装上路，全然倚靠神的供应而非积蓄。“作工的理当得到供应”指向神通过接待福音之人的款待来供应。他们的维生所需源于事工本身，而非储备物资。

(b) 防范牟取暴利的保障

乞讨袋常与靠乞讨为生的哲学家和宗教游方者相联系。耶稣禁止使用这种袋子，旨在区分他的使者与：

• 职业乞丐
• 游走各地的宗教骗子（伪善者）
• 为私利传道之人

(c) 紧迫性与简朴性

他们不可索求给养——凡领受天国之处，必得自由供应。这短期训练使命着重宣讲而非筹备。
不带钱囊、不备外衣、不携多双鞋，意味着：

• 行动迅速
• 保持专注
• 全然信靠神

(d) 关系依赖而非自给自足

门徒要进入家宅，接受款待，建立关系。神的供应通过人而来，而非孤立。这同时考验听道者：他们是否接纳使者？是否通过供应参与神的工作？

(3) 逼迫、惊惶与平安（10:16–39）

跟随耶稣者须谨记使命，因福音可能遭遇拒绝（10:14）。勿在顽固抵挡中虚耗光阴（10:13,15），当继续前行（10:14）。门徒的自我认知源于崇高呼召，而非世俗认可。逼迫并非偶然——乃是使命的恒常特征。耶稣差遣门徒“进到狼群中间”（10:16）。我们祈求策略上的智慧与动机上的纯洁。因此：

• 勿惊惶：“不要怕他们”（10:26）
• 当敬畏神（10:28-33）

和平并非必须不惜一切代价维系。耶稣的信息具有筛选与分裂的力量，因为它直指人们深植于心的价值观——那些常在公开场合捍卫、却在私下谈话中掩饰的价值观（10:34-39）。对基督的效忠甚至可能破坏最亲密的关系。

(4) 赏赐（10:40-42）

耶稣最后指出，接待他使者的人将获得何等赏赐。

何谓 “这些小弟兄”（这些微不足道的人）？
此处并非指孩童。上下文表明，他们指的是耶稣的门徒——那些被差遣出去时一无所有（不带行囊，不穿外衣）的脆弱、无名、地位卑微的追随者。在世人眼中，他们是“小”的：依赖他人、暴露无遗、不起眼。

为何是 “一杯凉水”？
凉水是常见的、未经加热的、廉价的、几乎人人都能获得的饮品。耶稣选择最微小的善行来阐明道理：无论多么贫穷、卑微或受限，无人不能参与上帝国度的事工。

为何强调 “因门徒的名”？
此举蒙赏并非仅因善行本身，更因行善者承认对耶稣的效忠。接待门徒就是接待差遣他来的那位（10:40）。

为何“他决不会得不到他的赏赐”？
耶稣使用强烈的双重否定（ou mē，希腊文）——永不被遗忘。这赏赐是确定的，被神铭记，终将在天国实现。神留意世人所忽视的。

终结反思
凡是出于信心的善行——无论多么微小——只要是为基督的仆人所行，都必被上帝看见、铭记并赏赐。职分、薪酬、逼迫、惊惶、平安、奖赏。要清楚该期待什么、该舍弃什么、该持守什么。愿你度过美好的一天。
