Isaiah 13–23 had their attention on the fate of the individual nations while Isaiah 24–27 focused on the triumph of God over the whole earth, not just over each nation mentioned.
When God judges, the effects would be actual and real, regardless of social status (24:2), master or slave, maid or mistress, buyer or seller, lender or borrower, creditor or debtor (24:2). None would escape because all have transgressed God's laws (24:5).
Isaiah 24:14–16
[14] They lift up their voices, they sing for joy;
over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west.
[15] Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD;
in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
[16] From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise,
of glory to the Righteous One.
But I say, “I waste away,
I waste away. Woe is me!
For the traitors have betrayed,
with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” (ESV)
All of Creation praised the LORD from the beginning of time, till the end of time. Invitations go out to the east, to the western coastlands and to the ends of the earth to join in exalting the LORD.
Yet the prophet was unable, for the moment, to join in this singing in view of the bleak state of affairs that he saw around him—terror, destruction and drunkenness (24:17-20).
LESSON: There is nothing absolutely reliable on the earth or in the earth's inhabitants. Verse 24:16 reminded readers of the tendency for traitors and betrayals to be prevalent. Feelings of being trapped without escape from the earth and her inhabitants contribute to mental issues. Would we commit ourselves to the living and all-powerful God so that life makes more sense?
Isaiah 24:23
[23] Then the moon will be confounded
and the sun ashamed,
for the LORD of hosts reigns
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and his glory will be before his elders. (ESV)
APPLICATION: Those who worship the moon or the sun gods might have considered them as more glorious than the glory of the God of Mount Zion and Jerusalem. However, this was not to be. Even the glory of the moon or the sun could not be compared with the LORD of hosts'. Therefore the moon and sun hung in shame. Which side would you choose today?
