Who do you think is ‘good soil’? The religious? The famous? In Luke 8, Jesus flips that idea upside down—showing that the people you least expect are the ones truly receiving His Word. Let’s uncover who they are… and why it matters for you.

When Jesus tells the parable of the sower in Luke 8, He confronts us with a searching question: What kind of soil are we? But just as importantly, we must ask: Who do we assume could ever be “good soil”?

Our instincts often betray us. We categorise people—by background, status, past sin, or outward appearance—and quietly decide who is likely to receive God’s Word. Yet Luke 8 overturns those assumptions again and again.

(1) First, we see that even those once bound in darkness are welcomed. Women like Mary Magdalene, delivered from demonic oppression (Luke 8:1–2), are not disqualified—they are transformed and brought near. The soil of their hearts, once hardened, becomes receptive by grace.

(2) Next, we encounter those from positions of influence. Joanna, connected to political power through Herod’s household (Luke 8:3), also follows Jesus. In spite of “political” risk to follow Jesus when her husband manages the household that has a long negative history in the land (the Herods), Joanna courageously followed and served. Status neither guarantees nor prevents good soil; the kingdom reaches across social boundaries.

APPLICATION: Jesus then reminds us that hearing is not passive. “Take care then how you hear” (Luke 8:18). Good soil is marked not merely by exposure to truth, but by a heart that receives, holds fast, and bears fruit with perseverance.

(3) Even family ties offer no special advantage. When told His mother and brothers are waiting, Jesus replies that His true family are “those who hear the word of God and do it” (Luke 8:21). Spiritual fruit—not lineage—reveals good soil.

Finally, Luke shows us what this good soil looks like in action:

The disciples, though fearful, begin to grasp who Jesus is as He calms the storm (Luke 8:22–25). Faith grows as they behold His authority.

The man delivered from a legion of demons values Jesus above all else, even when others prioritize economic stability over transformation (Luke 8:26–39).

The woman with the discharge pushes through the crowd in faith, believing even a touch will heal her (Luke 8:42–48).

Jairus, a synagogue ruler, humbles himself and trusts Jesus for his daughter’s life (Luke 8:40–42, 49–56).

These are the surprising examples of “good soil.” They are not the predictable, the polished, or the privileged. They are those who hear, believe, cling to Christ, and act in faith—often against all odds.

So who, then, are the good soil?

They are not a specific type of person we can easily identify. They are those—from any background—whose hearts God has prepared to receive His Word, respond in faith, and bear fruit.

This truth reshapes how we see others. No one is beyond the reach of God’s transforming grace. The unlikely may become the most fruitful. And it reshapes how we see ourselves. The question is not whether we look like good soil on the outside, but whether we are truly receiving Christ on the inside.

Prayer

Lord, break up the hardened places in our hearts. Remove our assumptions about others, and give us eyes to see as You see. Make us good soil—ready to hear, eager to obey, and faithful to bear fruit for Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
