Have you ever wondered why God doesn't remove the pain you've prayed about again and again? Paul asked God three times to take away his 'thorn,' but God's answer wasn't removal—it was, 'My grace is sufficient for you.' That answer can change how you see your struggles.

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 12:7–9
[7] So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. [8] Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. [9] But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (ESV)

The world celebrates strength, success, and impressive achievements. Even in ministry, it is easy to measure spiritual maturity by visible accomplishments or extraordinary experiences. Paul certainly had reasons to boast. In 2 Corinthians 12:1–5, he describes receiving extraordinary visions and revelations from the Lord—experiences few believers have ever known. Yet instead of dwelling on these spiritual highs, Paul quickly shifts the focus to something far less glamorous: his weakness.

To keep him humble, God allowed "a thorn...in the flesh" (v. 7). What exactly was this thorn?

The Bible never tells us, and that omission may be intentional. Throughout church history, many suggestions have been offered:

*A chronic physical illness or painful eye condition (cf. Gal. 4:13–15; 6:11).
*Recurring physical pain or disability.
*Emotional or psychological struggles such as deep anxiety or depression.
*Constant persecution and opposition from enemies.
*Relentless harassment from false teachers.
*Persistent temptation or spiritual warfare.
*The lasting scars and trauma from repeated suffering, imprisonment, and beatings.

While thoughtful believers continue to debate its precise nature, Scripture makes one thing unmistakably clear: the purpose of the thorn mattered far more than its identity.

Paul tells us twice why it was given: "to keep me from becoming conceited." The very revelations that could have led to pride became the occasion for deeper dependence on God. Even though Satan intended the thorn to harass Paul, God sovereignly used it to sanctify him. What the enemy meant for discouragement, God used for humility and spiritual growth.

Naturally, Paul prayed for its removal—three times. There is nothing unspiritual about asking God to take away pain. Yet God's answer was not the miracle Paul hoped for.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (v. 9)

Notice that God did not promise immediate relief; He promised sufficient grace. His grace would not merely help Paul survive—it would enable him to thrive spiritually in the midst of weakness.

This changes the way we think about hardship. We often ask, "How can I escape this?" God may instead ask, "How will you depend on Me through this?"

Paul's perspective is transformed. He no longer merely endures weakness; he boasts in it because weakness becomes the stage upon which Christ displays His power. His confidence shifts from his own abilities to God's sustaining grace.

This is the paradox of the Christian life. The world says strength comes through self-sufficiency. The gospel says true strength comes through dependence on Christ. Our greatest usefulness often emerges not despite our weakness but through it.

The thorn reminds us that God sometimes accomplishes greater spiritual purposes by sustaining us than by delivering us. His grace is always enough, even when His answers differ from our requests.

*Are you asking only for relief, or are you also asking God to display His power through your weakness?
*How might your weakness become a testimony to Christ's sufficient grace?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Your grace is always sufficient for every trial I face. When I am discouraged by my weaknesses, remind me that Your power shines brightest where my strength ends. Help me to trust Your wisdom, even when You choose not to remove the burdens I carry. Guard my heart from pride, deepen my dependence on Christ, and let my life display His strength through my weakness. May I learn, like Paul, to boast not in myself but in the all-sufficient grace of my Savior. In Jesus' name, Amen.

保罗两次告诉我们它被赐下的原因：“免得我自高自大。”那些本可能导致骄傲的启示，反而成了他更深地倚靠神的契机。尽管撒但本意是借这根“刺”来骚扰保罗，但神却主权地利用它来使保罗成圣。仇敌本意是使人灰心，神却将其化为谦卑与属灵成长的契机。

这改变了我们看待患难的方式。我们常问：“我该如何逃脱这一切？”而神或许会反问：“你将如何借着这一切来倚靠我？”

保罗的视角因此发生了转变。他不再仅仅是忍受软弱；他反倒以此为荣，因为软弱成了基督彰显祂大能的舞台。他的信心从自身的能力转向了神扶持的恩典。

这就是基督徒生命的悖论。世人说力量来自自给自足；福音却说，真正的力量来自对基督的倚靠。我们最大的用处，往往不是尽管有软弱才显现，而是通过软弱才显现。

这根刺提醒我们：有时，神通过扶持我们，比通过拯救我们，更能成就更伟大的属灵旨意。祂的恩典总是够用的，即使祂的回应与我们的请求不同。

*你只是求得解脱，还是也求神借着你的软弱彰显祂的大能？

祷告

天父，感谢祢，祢的恩典总能足够应付我所面临的每一次试炼。当我因自己的软弱而灰心时，求祢提醒我：在我力量竭尽之处，祢的大能才最显明。即使祢选择不挪去我肩上的重担，也求祢帮助我信靠祢的智慧。求祢保守我的心免于骄傲，加深我对基督的倚靠，并让我的生命借着我的软弱彰显祂的大能。愿我能像保罗一样，学会不夸口于自己，而是夸口于我救主那全然充足的恩典。奉耶稣的名祈求，阿们。
