What if I told you that God has given believers the best of the best? Not just a message, not just a messenger, and not just heavenly help—but His Son, Jesus Christ! Hebrews chapter 1 reveals why Jesus is absolutely supreme. Let’s discover Him together!
Hebrews 1 opens by lifting our eyes from everything that is temporary, created, and subordinate to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The chapter presents Christ as supreme: God has spoken through Him, He is divine, and even the angels serve according to God's purposes for those who will inherit salvation.
(1) The Speech of God: He Spoke to Us by His Son (Hebrews 1:1–7)
“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” — Hebrews 1:1–2
God is not a silent God. Throughout history, He spoke through the prophets in many different ways. But the coming of Jesus represents something greater: God's fullest and climactic revelation of Himself.
Jesus is not merely another messenger bringing God's message. He is the Son through whom God has spoken. Hebrews immediately gives us reasons why the Son is uniquely qualified:
- He is appointed heir of all things.
- Through Him, God created the world.
- He is the radiance of the glory of God.
- He is the exact imprint of God's nature.
- He upholds the universe by the word of His power.
- He made purification for sins.
- He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
The message is clear: when God speaks through Christ, we are hearing God's supreme and final revelation.
Reflections:
We often look for God's guidance in many places. Hebrews directs our attention first to Christ. Before asking, “What is God saying to me?”, we should ask, “What has God already revealed to me through His Son?”
Application:
Let Christ's words, character, work, and lordship become the foundation of our faith rather than our circumstances, feelings, or human opinions.
(2) The Spokesperson of God: Jesus, the Divine (Hebrews 1:8–13)
The chapter moves from what Christ says to who Christ is. The Father says of the Son: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.” — Hebrews 1:8
This is one of the strongest declarations of Christ's deity in the New Testament. Jesus is not merely God's greatest servant or highest-ranking angel. He is the divine Son.
Hebrews contrasts Jesus with the angels. Angels are glorious servants of God, but Christ is the eternal King.
The Son:
- has an eternal throne;
- rules with righteousness;
- is addressed as God;
- created the heavens and the earth;
- remains when creation itself changes;
- is unchanging: “you are the same”;
- is seated at God's right hand.
The angels are servants. The Son is King.
The angels worship. The Son is worshiped.
The angels are sent. The Son reigns.
This gives enormous encouragement to believers. Our faith does not rest upon a mere messenger. Our salvation rests upon Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God.
Reflections:
Everything around us changes—people, circumstances, possessions, health, governments, and even the created order. But Hebrews says of Christ: “You are the same, and your years will have no end.” — Hebrews 1:12. Therefore, the believer's confidence ultimately rests not in what changes around us, but in the unchanging Christ.
(3) The Help from God: Ministering Angels Sent to Serve Believers (Hebrews 1:14)
Hebrews concludes: “Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” After establishing Christ's superiority over the angels, Hebrews gives us an extraordinary glimpse of God's care for His people.
Angels have a real ministry, but their ministry is subordinate to Christ. They are sent by God to serve His purposes for those who will inherit salvation.
Notice the beautiful description of believers: “Those who are to inherit salvation.”
An inheritance is something given by grace. The believer's ultimate destiny is not merely to survive this life but to receive what God has promised through Christ. And while we journey toward that inheritance, God has appointed His servants to minister according to His purposes. This does not mean that Christians should become preoccupied with angels. Hebrews deliberately keeps our attention where it belongs:
The angels serve. Christ reigns.
Reflections:
We may not see how God is working behind the scenes. We may not understand everything happening around us. But Hebrews reminds us that God's purposes for His people are greater than what we can presently see.
The Best of the Best: Hebrews 1 gives us a beautiful progression:
*God speaks → through His Son.
*The Son reigns → as divine King.
*The angels serve → God's people.
Everything points upward to Christ. If we want to know what God is like, look to the Son. If we want to know where our confidence should rest, look to the Son. If we wonder whether God's purposes for His people are secure, look to the Son who sits at the right hand of God. Jesus is not simply one of the best. He is the incomparable Son.
A closing challenge: Hebrews 1 calls us to respond to Christ with faith, worship, confidence, and obedience.
*Do we listen when God speaks through His Son?
*Do we recognize Jesus for who He truly is?
*Do we trust the unchanging Christ when everything around us changes?
*And do we live with confidence that we belong to the God whose purposes for His people extend beyond what we can see?
May God bless you all greatly!
- 拥有永恒的宝座;
- 以公义施政;
- 被尊称为神;
- 创造了天地;
- 即使受造之物发生变化,祂依然长存;
- 永不改变:“你是永恒不变的”;
