Scripture Focus: “And the LORD said to Satan, ‘The LORD rebuke you, O Satan! … Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?’” (Zechariah 3:2, ESV)
Zechariah 3 gives us one of the most vivid gospel images in the Old Testament. Joshua the high priest stands before the Lord—yet he is clothed in filthy garments, the Hebrew word meaning polluted, defiled, unclean. He is supposed to represent God’s people, yet he stands guilty, exposed, and accused. And Satan is right there, pointing the finger. Just like he does with us.
(1) Satan accuses—but God defends
Before Joshua ever speaks, before he can make a defense, before he can justify himself, God intervenes: “The LORD rebuke you, O Satan!” (v. 2)
God doesn’t deny Joshua’s guilt. The filthy garments prove it. But God’s response is not to deny the accusation—it is to proclaim salvation: “Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” Christian, this is the story of every believer. Guilty? Yes. Condemned? No. Because God Himself steps in as our Defender.
(2) God removes the old garments
Then the angel says: “Remove the filthy garments from him.” (v. 4) God does not merely cover Joshua’s filth—He takes it away. In Christ, God does not overlook our sin; He strips it off, nails it to the cross, and buries it forever (Col. 2:14).
This is justification in picture form. We stand before God with nothing to offer, nothing to boast in, nothing to clean ourselves up with. But God says: “I have taken your iniquity away from you.” Salvation begins with God, not us.
(3) God clothes us in righteousness
God then says: “I will clothe you with pure vestments.” (v. 4) The gospel is not merely subtraction (sin removed); it is also addition (righteousness given). Joshua is not left standing half-dressed; God robes him in holiness.
This points forward to Christ, our High Priest, whose perfect righteousness is credited to us: “…not having a righteousness of my own … but that which comes through faith in Christ.” (Phil. 3:9) When God looks at His people, He sees them dressed in Christ.
(4) The Branch secures everything
At the end of the vision God says: “Behold, I will bring my servant the Branch.” (v. 8) This is Jesus—the coming King, Priest, and Savior. He is the reason Joshua can stand unafraid. He is the One who removes iniquity “in a single day.” (v. 9)
On the cross, Christ did everything Zechariah 3 foreshadows: rebuking Satan’s accusations, removing our guilt, and clothing us in His righteousness.
(5) Living in your new garments
The vision closes by calling Joshua to faithfulness: “If you will walk in my ways…then you shall rule my house.” (v. 7) We do not obey to earn God’s acceptance; we obey because we have already been accepted. Your obedience is not the garment—it is the fruit of the garment.
Prayer
Father, thank You for rebuking every accusation against me through the blood of Your Son. Thank You for removing my filthy garments and clothing me in Christ’s righteousness. Teach me to walk in Your ways with gratitude, joy, and confidence in what You have done. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

撒迦利亚书第三章为我们呈现了旧约中最生动的福音图景之一。大祭司约书亚站在耶和华面前——却身穿污秽的衣服,希伯来文原意指玷污、污秽、不洁。他本应代表神的子民,此刻却显出有罪、暴露、受控告的模样。撒但就在一旁指指点点,正如他对待我们一般。
(1) 撒但控告——神辩护
在约书亚开口辩解、为自己申明之前,神已介入:“撒但哪!耶和华斥责你!”(第2节)
神并未否认约书亚的罪咎,污秽的衣裳便是明证。但神的回应并非否认控告,而是宣告救赎:“这不是从火中抽出来的一根柴吗?”基督徒啊,这正是每位信徒的故事。有罪吗?有。被定罪吗?不。因神亲自成为我们的辩护者。
(2) 神除去旧衣裳
随后天使吩咐: “把这污秽的衣服脱去。”(第4节)神不仅遮盖约书亚的污秽——祂更将其彻底除去。在基督里,神并非漠视我们的罪,而是将其剥离、钉在十字架上,永远埋葬(歌罗西书2:14)。
这是图画式的称义。我们站在神面前一无所有,无所夸耀,无物洁净自己。但神说:“我已将你的罪孽从你身上挪去。”救恩始于神,而非我们。
(3) 神以公义为我们披上
神继而宣告:“我要以洁净的衣服给你穿上。”(第4节)福音不仅是减法(罪被除去),更是加法(公义被赐予)。约书亚并未半裸而立;神以圣洁为他披上华服。
这预表了基督——我们的大祭司,祂完美的义归算给我们:“...不是有自己因律法而得的义,而是有因信基督而得的义...”(腓3:9)当神看祂的子民时,祂看见他们披戴着基督。
(4) 枝子成就万事
异象终结时神宣告:“我必使我的仆人,就是大卫的苗裔出生。” (第8节)这正是耶稣——那将要来的君王、祭司与救主。因祂的缘故,约书亚得以无所畏惧。祂是那位“在一日之内”除掉罪孽的救主。(第9节)
在十字架上,基督成就了撒迦利亚书第三章所有预表:斥责撒但的控告,除去我们的罪孽,并以祂的义袍遮盖我们。
(5) 活出新衣的样式
异象以呼召约书亚持守忠信作结:“你若遵行我的道...就必治理我的家。”(第7节)我们顺服并非为赢得神的接纳,而是因已被接纳才顺服。你的顺服并非衣裳本身——而是衣裳结出的果子。
祷告
天父,感谢祢借着祢儿子的宝血斥责一切控告我的罪名。感谢祢脱去我污秽的衣裳,使我披戴基督的义袍。求祢教导我怀着感恩、喜乐与信心,遵行祢的道路,信靠祢已成就的一切。奉耶稣的名祈求。阿们。
