Four days in the tomb? No problem!
📖 Scripture Focus: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.’” — John 11:25 (ESV)
🌿 Reflection
John 11 tells the story of Lazarus’s death and resurrection, but at its heart, it is a revelation of who Jesus is and how we are called to trust Him—especially when His timing confuses us.
1️⃣ When Jesus Seems Late
Lazarus is sick, and Jesus delays. By the time He arrives, Lazarus has been dead four days. Martha’s words echo what many believers have felt: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (v.21) This is not unbelief—it is faith struggling with disappointment.
👉 Jesus’ delay was not neglect.
👉 It was purposeful.
“This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God.” (v.4). God’s glory and our good are often revealed after we think all hope is lost.
2️⃣ Jesus Enters Our Grief
Verse 35 is the shortest English verse in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” Jesus knows He will raise Lazarus—yet He still weeps. This shows us that (a) God is not distant from suffering (b) Jesus enters our pain before He removes it (c) Christian hope is not denial of sorrow—it is sorrow infused with hope.
3️⃣ A Personal Call to Faith
Before raising Lazarus, Jesus asks Martha a question: “Do you believe this?” (v.26) This is the center of the chapter. Not: “Do you understand?” or “Can you see how this will work out?”
But: 👉 Do you believe Me? Faith is not trusting the outcome—it is trusting the Person.
4️⃣ Resurrection Power in the Present
When Jesus calls, “Lazarus, come out,” (v.43) Death obeys. This miracle points forward to:
(a) Jesus’ own resurrection later. (b) The future resurrection of all believers. (c) Spiritual resurrection now (new life in Christ). Every believer was once spiritually dead—and Christ called us out of the grave.
🙏 Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life. Help me trust You when Your timing is hard to understand. Meet me in my grief, strengthen my faith, and remind me that no situation is beyond Your power. I believe—help my unbelief. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
✝️ Gospel Connection
John 11 prepares us for the cross. Jesus raises Lazarus—then walks toward His own death. He gives life to His friend—by laying down His life for us. Because Jesus lives, all who trust in Him will live also.
