Having dealt with the superiority of the LORD over the gods of Babylon, the prophet now deals with Babylon herself. When we think of this ancient city of Babylon, we recall the empire as grand and beautiful in many aspects (her military, architecture, administration), yet she was arrogant and over-confident. These traits of arrogance or over-confidence frequently spilled over to relationships with others, even today.

Isaiah 47:8 Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart,“I am, and there is no one besides me; I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children”: (ESV)

There is absolutely no one who can claim “I am” (the everlasting and self-sufficient one from eternity past to eternity future) except God. Whatever our accomplishments, we cannot be totally self-sufficient.

REFLECTION: One of the purpose of Quiet Time is prepare ourselves beforehand mentally and Scripturally, before that situation or context of the passage springs on us in a sudden or unexpected manner. When pretentious praise or accolades are heaped on humans out of nowhere, would we fall into the trap of thinking that we can rise and survive without The LORD?

Isaiah 47:4–6 [4] Our Redeemer—the LORD of hosts is his name—is the Holy One of Israel. [5] Sit in silence, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms. [6] I was angry with my people;  I profaned my heritage; I gave them into your hand; you showed them no mercy; on the aged you made your yoke exceedingly heavy. (ESV)

We learn in this chapter both the great powers of The LORD and the punishment of the Chaldeans.  His people are reminded that it was the long-lasting grace of God that supported them till today such that they can still move, breathe and work.

REMINDERS:  The LORD sits supremely exalted. Whether in these recent tumultuous times or in calmer episodes of history, no nation (however powerful economically or politically) can stand against the LORD. How about ourselves?
