Luke records Jesus instructing His disciples to go ahead of Him into towns and villages. What is happening when followers are now in front by design of the Master? Is this good or bad? Can this happen, or Must this happen in a discipling journey?

(1) Sent “Ahead of Him” (Luke 10:1)

In Luke 10:1, Jesus sends out seventy-two disciples to go “ahead of Him” into towns and villages. This is a significant moment in the life of a disciple. Discipleship matures when followers no longer merely watch their Master, but when they become participants in His mission. Jesus empowers them to do the very work He has been doing—preaching, healing, and proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

When He sends them out, He sends them with a purpose, a mission. Discipleship is not just about knowledge or being a spectator of Jesus’ work; it’s about becoming active participants in the Kingdom of God. As followers of Christ, we are called to share in His mission, reflecting His love and truth in a world that desperately needs both.

Just as these seventy-two disciples were sent out with authority and purpose, we too are sent out today. Whether it’s in our homes, workplaces, or communities, we have the opportunity to share the hope of Jesus with those around us. True discipleship is about stepping into the mission field, bringing the light of Christ wherever we go, and acting as His hands and feet.

(2) A Son of Peace (Luke 10:6)

Jesus speaks of a “son of peace” in Luke 10:6, referring to someone who is open to receiving the message of the gospel. This phrase carries the weight of a person who is ready to receive the peace of Christ, someone whose heart is prepared to embrace the Kingdom of God.

But who is a “son of peace”? In biblical terms, peace isn’t simply the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of God’s wholeness, His blessing, and His reconciliation. The “primary” peace is peace with God after embracing the salvation offered by Jesus Christ. A “son of peace” is one who is receptive to God’s invitation, willing to welcome Christ into their life and home. These are the individuals who will hear and respond to the gospel with humility, who will allow God’s peace to transform their lives.

Such persons can extend this peace of God to others. Are you one?

As followers of Jesus, we must recognize that not everyone will be open to the message. But the good news is that there are people—sons and daughters of peace—who are ready to receive God’s Word. Our role is to seek out these individuals and share the message of the Kingdom, trusting that God will work in their hearts.

(3) Names Written in Heaven (Luke 10:17-20)

In Luke 10:17-20, the disciples return rejoicing over the power and authority they had in Jesus’ name, even over demons. But Jesus redirects their focus. He tells them, “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

The disciples were thrilled with the results of their ministry: miracles, healings, and spiritual victories. But Jesus teaches them that spiritual security and salvation are far more important than ministry success. Our true identity and joy do not come from what we do for God, but from what God has done for us in securing our salvation.

In the kingdom of God, the greatest treasure isn’t found in extraordinary works or results, but in the relationship we have with God, and the assurance that our names are written in the Lamb's book of life. Gratitude for spiritual blessings—the forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with the Father, and the promise of eternal life—should always take precedence over our earthly achievements.

(4) Practicing Jesus’ Teachings (Luke 10:25-42)

The final part of Luke 10 highlights two key lessons that illustrate what it means to be a true disciple of Christ:

(a) The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37): Jesus teaches the importance of loving our neighbour—not just in words, but in action. The Samaritan goes out of his way to help a man in need, showing that love and mercy extend beyond cultural boundaries, personal comfort, or social expectations. True discipleship is seen in how we love and serve others, especially those who are marginalized or in distress.

(b) Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42): In this passage, Jesus commends Mary for choosing to sit at His feet and listen to His teaching. Martha, while busy with tasks, is reminded by Jesus that the “necessary thing” is to desire and prioritise Jesus’ Word. Mary’s desire to learn and grow in intimacy with Jesus is what Jesus praises.

In both of these stories, Jesus shows us the balance between action and devotion. Discipleship isn’t merely about serving others (as important as that is); it’s about a heart that is aligned with Jesus, a heart that desires to hear His Word and grow in relationship with Him. As we serve others in mercy, we must also cultivate a desire to be with Jesus in intimacy, learning from Him, and receiving His Word.

Ultimately, discipleship is not a one-time act or a list of tasks—it’s about being formed by Jesus’ teachings and putting them into practice in every area of life.

Prayer

Father in Heaven. Thank You for calling us to be Your followers. Help us to go out with Your message of hope, sharing Your peace with everyone we meet. Teach us to live lives of mercy and devotion, reflecting Your love in all we do. Keep our hearts focused on the eternal reward You have prepared for us, and may we remain faithful to Your call. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
