Scripture: Lamentations 2:19 – "Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord!"

Devotion:

Lamentations 2 paints a dark picture of Jerusalem under judgment. The once-proud city is now broken. Children faint in the streets, priests and prophets are silenced, and the people cry out in agony. It’s hard to read without feeling the weight of loss and divine wrath.

For believers today, this chapter is a sobering reminder that God takes sin seriously. His holiness is not to be taken lightly. Jerusalem fell not because God was absent, but because His justice demanded action after generations of rebellion.

Yet even in the middle of judgment, there is a flicker of hope. Verse 19 urges the people to "pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord." This is the essence of repentance—an honest, broken, humble return to God. It's not too late to cry out.

Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, took upon Himself the wrath we deserved. The devastation we see in Lamentations points to a deeper need for a Saviour. While God's justice is real, so is His mercy. In Christ, judgment has been met, and grace abounds.

Reflection Questions:
(1) Am I taking God’s holiness seriously in how I live?

(2) Where do I need to repent and turn back to Him?

(3) How does the cross of Christ give me hope even in seasons of suffering?

Prayer:
Lord, I come to You with a broken heart. Teach me to weep over what grieves You. Help me not to take Your mercy for granted. Thank You for Jesus, who bore the judgment I deserve. Lead me into a life of repentance and trust. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
