When Jesus Is Near, Fear Doesn’t Get the Final Word.
Key verse: “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27, ESV)
Scripture Focus
Matthew 14 moves quickly through powerful scenes: the death of John the Baptist in the political storm of that day, the feeding of the five thousand, and Jesus walking on the water. Grief, compassion, provision, doubt, and worship all meet in one chapter—much like real life.
Reflection
The chapter opens in darkness. John the Baptist, faithful and obedient, is unjustly killed. His death reminds us that following God does not spare us from suffering. Yet even here, God’s purposes are not derailed. John’s life prepared the way for Jesus, and his death does not silence the truth he proclaimed.
After hearing the news, Jesus withdraws to a desolate place. But the crowds follow Him. Instead of turning them away,
“He had compassion on them and healed their sick” (v. 14).
Grief does not make Jesus distant; it deepens His compassion. When we bring our need to Him, even in our brokenness, He responds with mercy.
The feeding of the five thousand shows us the heart of the kingdom. The disciples see scarcity; Jesus sees opportunity. Five loaves and two fish are nothing in human hands—but in Jesus’ hands, they are more than enough. The miracle teaches us that obedience, not abundance, is what Jesus asks for. Are you counting or counting on the number of bank accounts, the balance, properties or assets, when what counts as more is one obedient heart?
Later, the disciples are caught in a storm. Jesus comes to them, walking on the water—revealing His divine authority over chaos. Peter steps out in faith, but fear pulls his eyes away from Jesus, and he begins to sink. Still, Jesus immediately reaches out His hand. Faith may falter, but grace is quicker.
The chapter ends with worship: “Truly you are the Son of God.” (v. 33) Storms don’t have the last word—worship does.
Application
(a) Bring your grief to Jesus. He meets sorrow with compassion, not distance.
(b) Offer what you have. Jesus multiplies surrendered obedience.
(c) Fix your eyes on Christ in the storm. Fear grows when focus shifts.
(d) Trust His hand. Even sinking faith is still faith reaching for Jesus.
Prayer
Dear God, when fear rises and the storm surrounds me, help me hear Your voice saying, “Do not be afraid.” Take what little I have and use it for Your glory. When my faith falters, reach out Your hand and hold me fast. I worship You as the all powerful God who overcomes all fear and storms of life. Lead me to greater and greater faith in you everyday. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

马太福音第十四章快速展开了几个震撼场景：施洗约翰在当时的政治风暴中遇害、五千人得饱足、耶稣行走在水面上。悲痛、怜悯、供应、疑惑与敬拜在这一章中交织——恰似真实人生。
默想
本章始于黑暗。忠信顺服的施洗约翰遭不公处决。他的殉道提醒我们：跟随神并不意味着免于苦难。然而即便在此刻，神的计划仍未受阻。约翰的生为耶稣预备道路，他的死未能湮灭他所传扬的真理。
听闻噩耗后，耶稣退往旷野。但人群仍尾随而来。祂非但未驱散众人，
“耶稣上了岸，看见一大群人，就怜悯他们，医好了他们的病人”（14节）。
悲痛未使耶稣疏离，反而深化了祂的怜悯。当我们带着需求来到祂面前，纵然身处破碎，祂仍以慈爱回应。
五千人吃饱的奇迹向我们展现了天国的真谛。门徒只看见匮乏，耶稣却看见契机。五饼二鱼在人手中微不足道——但在耶稣手中却绰绰有余。这神迹教导我们：耶稣所要的不是丰盛，而是顺服。当你数算银行账户的数量、余额、房产或资产时，可曾想过：真正珍贵的，不过是一颗顺服的心？
后来门徒遭遇风暴，耶稣踏水而来——彰显祂对混沌的至高权柄。彼得凭信心踏水而行，却因恐惧移开视线，随即下沉。耶稣仍即刻伸手相救。信心或可动摇，恩典却更迅捷。
本章以敬拜作结：“船上的人都拜他，说：“你真是 神的儿子。” (v. 33) 风暴并非最终话语——敬拜才是。
应用
(a) 将你的悲伤带到耶稣面前。祂以怜悯而非疏离回应哀伤。
(b) 献上你所有的。耶稣必使顺服的奉献倍增。
(c) 在风暴中定睛基督。目光转移时，恐惧便滋长。
(d) 信靠祂的手。纵使信心沉沦，仍是在向耶稣伸手。
祷告
亲爱的上帝，当恐惧升起，风暴将我包围时，求祢让我听见祢的声音说：“不要害怕。”求祢接纳我微薄的奉献，为祢的荣耀而用。当我的信心动摇时，求祢伸手紧紧抓住我。我敬拜祢——这位全能的上帝，祢战胜生命中一切恐惧与风暴。求祢每日引领我，使我对祢的信心日益增长。奉耶稣的名祈求。阿们。
