QT 17/02/2026 Tue. New Year, Sing a New Song
READ http://www.esv.org/psalm33:1-9
As we welcome the first day of Chinese New Year and step into the Year of the Horse, Psalm 33 calls us to begin not merely with resolutions, traditions, or celebrations—but with worship.
(1) A New Year Begins with Joyful Praise (vv. 1–3)
“Shout for joy in the LORD… Sing to him a new song.”
The psalmist commands God’s people to rejoice loudly, skillfully, and wholeheartedly. The New Year is often filled with new clothes, new decorations, and new hopes. But Scripture invites us to something deeper: a new song.
A “new song” is not just a new melody—it is fresh gratitude for fresh mercies. Each year we experience new challenges, new blessings, and new lessons in God’s faithfulness. Therefore, our praise should not be stale or routine. It should be renewed.
The Year of the Horse symbolizes strength, endurance, and forward movement. Yet our true strength is not in our own energy or determination. We begin the year by anchoring our joy not in prosperity or luck, but in the LORD Himself.
Praise befits the upright because worship aligns our hearts with truth.
(2) The Foundation for Our Confidence: God’s Word and Character (vv. 4–5)
“For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.”
Why can we sing a new song with confidence? Because God’s Word is upright. His works are faithful. His love fills the earth.
In a world of uncertainty—economic fluctuations, global tensions, personal unknowns—God remains unchanging. His righteousness and justice are not seasonal. His steadfast love (hesed) does not expire when the calendar turns.
As we exchange New Year greetings wishing one another blessing and peace, we remember: the earth is already full of the steadfast love of the LORD. We are not stepping into an empty year—we are stepping into a year already filled with His covenant love.
(3) The Power Behind Our Hope (vv. 6–7)
“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made…”
The same God who created the heavens by His Word holds the oceans in His hand. His breath brought galaxies into being. His command established creation.
If He can speak the universe into existence, He can sustain your family, your work, your ministry, and your future.
The New Year may feel vast and unknown like the sea. But the Lord “gathers the waters” and places the deep in storehouses. What feels overwhelming to us is fully governed by Him.
The Year of the Horse may symbolize speed and movement—but God’s Word stands firm. Our security is not in how fast we run, but in how firmly He reigns.
(4) The Right Response: Reverent Awe (vv. 8–9)
“Let all the earth fear the LORD… For he spoke, and it came to be.”
Joyful praise and reverent awe go together. We shout for joy because we stand in awe. We celebrate because we fear the Lord.
As fireworks sound and families gather, Psalm 33 reminds us that true blessing flows from recognizing God’s sovereign authority. He speaks—and reality obeys.
This year will unfold not by chance, not by zodiac sign, not by human prediction—but by the command of the Lord who “spoke, and it came to be.”
(5) New Year Application: Singing a New Song
(a) Renew your worship – Do not let your praise grow old. Begin the year with intentional thanksgiving.
(b) Renew your trust – Anchor your plans in God’s faithful Word.
(c) Renew your awe – Remember who rules the heavens and the earth.
(d) Renew your hope – The steadfast love of the LORD fills this coming year.
As we enter the Year of the Horse, may we run with endurance—but more importantly, may we worship with renewed hearts.
Let this be the year we truly sing a new song—not just with instruments, but with transformed lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
As we begin this New Year, we praise You with joy. Thank You for Your steadfast love that fills the earth. Your Word is upright and Your works are faithful. You spoke the universe into being, and You hold our future in Your hands. Teach us to sing a new song this year—one of deeper trust, stronger faith, and greater reverence. May our homes be filled with praise and our lives reflect Your righteousness and justice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Steadfast Love of the LORD
[1] Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
[2] Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
[3] Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

and all his work is done in faithfulness.
[5] He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
[6] By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
