Today, we're diving into a powerful passage from the Gospel of John—chapter 5, where Jesus reveals some life-changing truths about resurrection, judgment, and the authority He shares with the Father. We’ll be exploring two main themes: the same resurrection with different outcomes and the Old Moses versus the New Moses—and what they mean for us today.

Today, we’ll look at how our response to Jesus determines our eternal destiny, whether we embrace the resurrection of life or face judgment. Plus, we'll examine how Jesus fulfills the role of Moses and why both the Old and New Moses were either rejected or received. Let’s go!

(1) Same Resurrection, Different Outcome (John 5:19-29)

In John 5:19-29, Jesus expounds on the nature of His divine mission and authority. The passage begins with a declaration of His oneness with the Father, emphasising that Jesus does nothing apart from the Father’s will (John 5:19-20). The Father has given Jesus the authority to grant both spiritual and physical resurrection (John 5:21). Jesus further elaborates that a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment (John 5:28-29).

Key Points for Reflection:

(a) Resurrection of Life vs. Resurrection of Judgment: Jesus speaks of two different types of resurrection. All people will fall into one of the two categories, including you. Both are acts of His divine power, but the outcome depends entirely on the condition of the heart and one’s response to Him. Jesus, as the Son of God, will one day raise all people, but the distinction is made between those who have responded to His call by faith (resulting in eternal life) and those who have rejected Him (resulting in eternal judgment).

(b) The Role of Jesus in Judgment: While Jesus came to offer salvation, He also holds the authority to judge. This judgment is not arbitrary but is based on whether we accept or reject His word and work. Jesus' perfect obedience to the Father, His identity as the Son, and His sacrificial death all contribute to the offer of grace, but they also set the stage for the final judgment.

(c) Eternal Life is a Gift: The resurrection to eternal life is a free gift given to those who believe in Jesus. The resurrection to judgment, on the other hand, is a consequence of rejecting Christ. This division underlines the seriousness of how we respond to the gospel.

Application:

Are we living in light of the resurrection of life? As Christians, we are called to live in the present reality of the resurrection—to live with the hope that death is not the final word, but eternal life with God is. This truth shapes how we view our present lives and our relationships with others. How will we face the resurrection? Our response to Jesus now determines how we will experience the resurrection. Will we be raised to eternal life, or will we face judgment? Jesus offers an open invitation for all to come to Him and receive eternal life.

(2) The Old Moses and the New Moses: Both Rejected or Received? (John 5:30-47)

In John 5:30-47, Jesus shifts His focus to the testimony of those who bear witness to His identity. He starts by explaining that He does not seek His own will but only the will of the Father who sent Him (John 5:30). Jesus then references multiple witnesses to His divine authority: John the Baptist (John 5:33-35), His miraculous works (John 5:36), the Father Himself (John 5:37-38), and the Scriptures (John 5:39-47). Jesus specifically confronts the Pharisees and Jewish leaders, showing that they fail to see the truth in the Scriptures because they do not recognize Him as the fulfillment of the law and the prophets.

Key Points for Reflection:

(a) The Old Moses (The Law) and The New Moses (Jesus): Jesus makes it clear that Moses, the great lawgiver, wrote about Him (John 5:46). Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets, yet the Jewish leaders fail to see this. They were experts in the Scriptures, but they missed the central point—the Scriptures pointed to Jesus, and yet they rejected Him.

(b) The Danger of Rejection of the True Moses: Just as the Israelites in the Old Testament often rejected Moses and God’s message through him, the Jewish leaders in Jesus’ day rejected the greater Moses, Jesus Himself. Jesus is the fulfillment of what Moses pointed toward, but they failed to recognize Him. Their refusal to accept Jesus revealed their unwillingness to accept God’s plan of salvation.

(c) The Role of Scripture: Jesus calls the leaders to examine the Scriptures, for they testify about Him. Yet, despite their knowledge, they did not believe in Him because their hearts were hardened. This highlights the importance of allowing the Word of God to lead us to Christ. We are to go beyond mere mental knowledge of Scripture data alone, and accept the Jesus Christ wholeheartedly.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of eternal life through Jesus’ resurrection. Help me to live each day in the hope of that resurrection, knowing that my future is secure in You. May I be faithful in sharing this hope with others, so that they too may know the resurrection of life. Help me to recognize Jesus for who He truly is—the fulfillment of the Scriptures, the Saviour of the world. May I never harden my heart to His message but always seek to follow Him with all of my being. Reveal to me any areas where I am resisting Your truth and give me the grace to surrender fully to You. As I read the Scriptures, open my eyes to see Jesus in every passage. May I not simply be a hearer of the Word, but a doer, living out the truth of the gospel. Let the Scriptures lead me to a deeper relationship with You, O Lord. In Jesus’ name.
