READ http://www.esv.org/zechariah6
Zechariah 6 and 7 lift our eyes to the unstoppable purposes of God. Four chariots—heavenly agents—go out to patrol the earth at the Lord’s command. God is not passive. He sees injustice, rebellion, and hardness of heart, and He acts in perfect righteousness. For those with diamond-hard hearts, this chapter is a sober warning: resistance to God does not halt His plan—it only determines how we experience it.
(1) God’s Rule Cannot Be Resisted
The vision of the chariots reminds us that God governs the nations. These are not random forces of history; they are sent “from standing before the Lord of all the earth” (Zech. 6:5).
A diamond-hard heart says, “I will rule myself.” God’s response is clear: No one escapes My authority. Hardened hearts may ignore God, mock Him, or delay obedience—but God still moves history toward His holy ends. The consequences of hardness are not the absence of God’s rule, but experiencing that rule as judgment instead of blessing.
Truth: You will meet God either as King who saves or Judge who overrules.
(2) The Branch: Mercy Offered Before Judgment
At the heart of Zechariah 6 is grace. Joshua the high priest is crowned, pointing forward to “the Branch”—the promised Messiah who would be both King and Priest (Zech. 6:12–13).
This is the gospel in shadow form: (a) A King who reigns in righteousness (b) A Priest who bears sin and makes peace with God. Before speaking of consequences, God offers reconciliation.
A diamond-hard heart rejects Christ’s kingship and despises His priestly sacrifice. The tragedy is not ignorance—it is resistance to mercy. Truth: Hardened hearts are not neutral; they actively refuse grace.
(3) Peace or Pressure: The Consequence of Refusal
Zechariah ends with a promise and a warning: “Those who are far off shall come and help to build the temple of the LORD… And this shall come to pass, if you will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God” (Zech. 6:15).
Obedience leads to participation in God’s work. Hardness leads to exclusion, discipline, and loss.
A diamond-hard heart may still be religious, still attend worship, still know the language of faith—but inward resistance always produces outward consequences: (a) Stunted spiritual growth (b)
Loss of joy and peace (c) God’s discipline rather than His delight
Truth: God’s work goes forward—with or without us. Obedience determines whether we share in the joy.
(4) From Diamond to Flesh
Elsewhere Zechariah explains the problem plainly: “They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law” (Zech. 7:12).
Only God can change such a heart. And He does—through Christ. The cross shatters diamond-hard resistance. The risen Branch offers a new heart, responsive and alive. What judgment demands, grace provides. If your heart has grown hard—toward repentance, obedience, or surrender—hear this: God is still speaking. The King-Priest still invites you. But refusal has consequences. Today is the day to yield.
Prayer:
Lord, break what is hard in me. Rule me as King, cleanse me as Priest, and make my heart alive to Your voice. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
