Jeremiah 6:16–18
[16] Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ [17] I set watchmen over you, saying,‘Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!’ But they said, ‘We will not pay attention.’ [18] Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what will happen to them. (ESV)
Jeremiah 6 is a heavy chapter filled with warning. The prophet Jeremiah is sounding the alarm to Judah, calling them to repent from their deep moral and spiritual decline. God has set watchmen—His prophets—on the walls, warning the people of coming judgment, urging them to listen, but they refused. The nation is heading toward destruction because it has abandoned the Word of the Lord.
REFLECTION: What does this mean for us today?
God still sets watchmen. These may be pastors, teachers, parents, or even fellow believers—anyone He uses to speak truth into our lives. And like ancient Judah, we too face the temptation to close our ears, harden our hearts, and follow the way of comfort rather than obedience.
The trumpet is sounding—God is calling His people to wake up. He is calling us to:
(1) Return to His Word (Jer. 6:16 – “Stand by the roads … and look… for the ancient paths”);
(2) Walk in the ancient paths, where righteousness and truth dwell;
(3) Recognize that peace without holiness is a false peace (Jer. 6:14 – “They have healed the wound of my people lightly…”).
The tragedy of Jeremiah 6 is not just that judgment is coming, but that the people had every opportunity to avoid it. God warned them, pleaded with them, called them. But they chose not to listen.
APPLICATION:
(1) Are you ignoring any "trumpet sounds" in your life?
(2) Are there areas where God is calling you to repentance, but you’ve tuned Him out?
(3) Are you seeking peace on your own terms, or on God’s?
Call to Action
This passage is not just a warning—it's an invitation. God’s call to repentance is always filled with mercy. If you hear the trumpet today, don’t harden your heart. Run back to Jesus. Walk in His ways. He alone offers true peace—not the kind that dulls our conscience, but the kind that restores our soul.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being patient with us even when we ignore Your warnings. Forgive us for turning a deaf ear to Your Word. Help us to walk in the ancient paths, to listen to Your voice, and to follow You no matter the cost. Let us be watchmen too—faithful to warn others—an important act of love towards others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

(1) 回到祂的话语中去(耶 6:16 -- “你们要站在路上察看,寻访远古的路径,看哪一条是美善的路...”);
(2) 行在古道上,那里有公义和真理;
