Scripture: Ezekiel 25:6-7
“Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel, therefore I will stretch out my hand against you..."
Reflection:
In Ezekiel 25, God speaks against nations who rejoiced when Israel fell into judgment. The Ammonites, Moabites, Edomites, and Philistines mocked, took advantage, or sought revenge when God's people were disciplined. These were Israel’s neighbours who had either rejoiced over Israel’s downfall or had taken advantage of her suffering.
But here, God reminds them—and us—that He is sovereign over all nations, and He sees not only actions but the attitude of the heart.
The Ammonites “clapped their hands” in delight over Israel's misfortune, revealing a deep-rooted malice. God doesn’t ignore such gloating. His justice is not partial; He holds all accountable, including those who exploit the pain of others for their own gain.
Application:
(1) Guard your heart. Rejoicing in someone else’s downfall—even if you think they "deserved" it—can reveal bitterness or pride that grieves God.
(2) Trust in God's justice. When you feel wronged, resist the temptation to retaliate or rejoice in revenge. God's justice is perfect and will come in His timing.
(3) Intercede, don’t mock. When others fall, whether nations or individuals, let it move you to prayer and compassion, not celebration.
Prayer:
Lord, search my heart and remove any hidden pride or bitterness. Help me to trust Your justice and respond to others with compassion, even when they fail. Teach me to rejoice in Your mercy, not in the misfortunes of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
