How to find out who (Satan or God or Self) is doing with “promptings” to do certain things in life whenever we feel that is a prompting? Today we reflect on the discernment in following the Holy Spirit within the boundaries of Scripture.

Scripture Focus

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” — John 14:26 (ESV)

Reflection: Led Within God’s Word

Many believers desire to be led by the Holy Spirit. We long for guidance in decisions, relationships, and ministry. Yet, as John 14:26 reminds us, the Spirit’s work is to teach us all things and bring Christ’s words to remembrance. In other words, the Spirit does not lead apart from the Word of God—He illuminates it, applies it, and calls us to obedience within its boundaries.

Sometimes, Christians claim to be “led by the Spirit” to do something that actually contradicts Scripture—perhaps a choice rooted in emotion, pride, or cultural pressure. True guidance from the Holy Spirit never contradicts God’s written Word. The Spirit will never prompt a believer to disobey God’s commands; He always points us back to Christ and the truths God has breathed out.

This verse challenges us to anchor our sense of “leading” in God’s Word. The Spirit’s teaching is consistent with Scripture: He brings to mind what Jesus said, reveals truth, convicts of sin, and directs in alignment with God’s eternal will. A Spirit-led life is not a free pass to act on feelings or impulses—it is a life submissive to God’s Word, sensitive to His Spirit.

Application

(1) Test all impressions against Scripture. Before acting on a sense of spiritual leading, ask: Does this align with the teaching of Jesus and the commands of God’s Word?

(2) Cultivate a life in the Word. The Spirit can remind you of Scripture only if Scripture is already in your heart and mind. Daily Bible reading equips you to discern His voice. Are you taking up Scripture memory exercises as part of your general spiritual health?

(3) Pray for Spirit-led discernment, not mere impulses. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your actions within the safe boundaries of God’s Word. True leading glorifies Christ, honours God, and obeys His commands.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to be my Helper and Teacher. Lead me in ways that honour Jesus and align with Your Word. Guard me from following impulses or feelings that contradict Scripture. Teach me all things and bring Christ’s words to my remembrance, so that every step I take is guided by You and grounded in God’s truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
