What if following Jesus cost you everything… would you still say yes? Are you a fan of Jesus… or a true disciple? There’s a big difference. Let’s unpack Luke 14 today.
🌱 Jesus didn’t ask for part of your life—He asked for all of it. Are you ready? True Discipleship Requires Surrender. In Luke 14, Jesus challenges the crowd with words that feel both inviting and sobering. He heals, teaches humility, and then turns directly to what it really means to follow Him—not casually, but completely.
🪶 (1) Humility Before Honour (Luke 14:7–11)
Jesus tells a parable about choosing the lowest seat at a banquet. In a culture obsessed with status, He flips expectations. God’s kingdom values humility over recognition. Instead of striving to elevate ourselves, we’re called to trust God to lift us in His time.
Heart Check: Am I seeking recognition or serving quietly? Where can I choose humility today?
🍽️ (2) The Radical Invitation (Luke 14:12–24)
Highlighted Scripture: [13] But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, [14] and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Luke 14:13–14, ESV)
Jesus describes a banquet where the invited guests make excuses, so the host invites the poor, disabled, and outcast instead. God’s grace is extended to those who often feel overlooked or unworthy. The kingdom is open—but many still reject the invitation because of distractions or priorities.
Heart Check: Am I making excuses that crowd out God? Who can I extend God’s invitation to? Do I extend kindness only to those who can “pay me back” one day?
🔥(3) Counting the Cost (Luke 14:25–33)
Jesus speaks plainly: following Him means placing Him above family, comfort, and even our own lives. He uses examples of building a tower and going to war—both requiring careful counting of cost. Faith isn’t just emotional or convenient—it’s a total commitment. Jesus isn’t looking for fans; He calls disciples who are willing to surrender everything.
Heart Check: What am I holding back from God? Have I truly counted the cost of following Christ?
🧂 (4) Salt That Doesn’t Lose Its Flavour (Luke 14:34–35)
Salt is meant to preserve and enhance—but if it loses its effectiveness, it becomes useless. As believers, we’re called to live distinctly—our faith should influence the world around us. Compromise dulls our witness.
Heart Check: Is my life reflecting Christ clearly? Where might I be blending in instead of standing out? Following Jesus is not about comfort—it’s about commitment. But in losing our lives for His sake, we discover the fullness of life He promised. Would you take this path of discipleship with commitment?
🙏 Prayer
Dear Lord, teach me to follow You with my whole heart. Strip away pride, distractions, and anything that competes with my devotion to You. Give me the courage to count the cost and still say “yes.” Make my life a reflection of Your grace and truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
