What does God really care about in our worship? Is it head coverings—or something much deeper? In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul points us beyond outward practices to hearts that honor Christ, and he reminds us why the Lord's Supper is never just another meal.
First Corinthians 11 teaches us that Christian worship is not about personal preference but about honoring Christ. Whether Paul addresses head coverings or the Lord's Supper, his concern is the same: our worship should reflect God's design, God's order, and God's glory.
The chapter begins with instructions about head coverings, a passage that has been understood differently by faithful Christians throughout history. While believers may disagree about how this practice applies today, Paul's underlying principle is clear: men and women are called to honor God by embracing His good design.
Paul reminds us:
"Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God." (1 Cor. 11:11–12)
Rather than promoting superiority or inferiority, Paul emphasizes mutual dependence. Men and women have distinct roles, yet equal dignity and equal value before God. Neither can flourish apart from the other because both ultimately belong to God. Our identity is not found in competing with one another but in joyfully living according to God's created order.
Paul then turns to a more serious issue: the abuse of the Lord's Supper. Instead of displaying unity, the Corinthians were divided by selfishness. Some feasted while others went hungry. What was meant to proclaim Christ's sacrificial love had become an expression of pride and disregard for fellow believers.
Paul reminds them of the true meaning of Communion:
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." (v.26)
The Lord's Supper points us backward to Christ's sacrifice, inward to self-examination, upward in thanksgiving, outward in unity with His body, and forward to His glorious return. Because Communion is holy, Paul gives a solemn warning:
"Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup." (v.28)
Self-examination is not meant to keep believers away from the Lord's Table but to bring them to it with humble repentance and renewed faith. We do not come because we are worthy—we come because Christ is worthy. We confess our sins, trust in His finished work, and remember that His body was broken and His blood was shed for our salvation.
Whether we gather for worship, relate to one another, or come to the Lord's Table, our goal is the same: to honour Christ with reverence, humility, unity, and gratitude.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus Christ, who gave His body and shed blood for my salvation. Teach me to worship with reverence and humility. Help me to honour Your design in my relationships, to pursue unity with my brothers and sisters in Christ, and to come to the Table with a repentant heart and grateful faith. May my worship always proclaim Christ’s death until He comes again. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

本章开篇论及头巾的问题，这一段经文在历史上一直被虔诚的基督徒们作不同理解。虽然信徒们对这一习俗在当今的适用方式可能存在分歧，但保罗所阐明的根本原则是明确的：男女都被呼召要顺服神的良善设计，以此尊荣神。
保罗提醒我们：

保罗并非要宣扬优越感或自卑感，而是强调彼此依存。男女虽有不同的角色，但在上帝面前却享有同等的尊严和价值。双方都属于上帝，因此任何一方都无法脱离另一方而蓬勃发展。我们的身份并非来自彼此竞争，而是来自欢欣地按照上帝所设立的秩序生活。
随后，保罗转向了一个更严峻的问题：滥用主的晚餐。哥林多教会非但没有展现出合一，反而因自私而分裂。有些人大吃大喝，而另一些人却饿着肚子。本应宣扬基督牺牲之爱的圣餐，竟沦为骄傲和漠视弟兄姊妹的表现。
保罗提醒他们圣餐的真正意义：
“你们每逢吃这饼，喝这杯，就是宣扬主的死，直等到他来。”（第26节）
主的晚餐引导我们回顾基督的牺牲，向内进行自我省察，向上献上感恩，向外与祂的身体合一，并向前期盼祂荣耀的再来。正因圣餐是圣洁的，保罗发出庄严的警告：
“所以人应当省察自己，然后才吃这饼，喝这杯。”（第28节）
自省的目的并非要使信徒远离主的圣餐桌，而是要让他们怀着谦卑的悔改之心和更新的信心来到圣餐桌前。我们前来并非因为自己配得——而是因为基督配得。我们认罪，信靠祂已成全的工作，并铭记祂的身体被折断、祂的宝血被倾倒，都是为了我们的救恩。
无论是聚集敬拜、彼此相交，还是来到主的圣餐桌前，我们的目标都是一样的：以敬畏、谦卑、合一和感恩的心来尊荣基督。
祷告
亲爱的天父，感谢祢差遣耶稣基督，祂为我的救恩献上身体、倾流宝血。求祢教导我以敬畏和谦卑的心敬拜祢。求祢帮助我在人际关系中尊崇祢的旨意，追求与基督里的弟兄姊妹合一，并怀着悔改的心和感恩的信心来到主的圣餐桌前。愿我的敬拜时刻宣扬基督的死，直到祂再来。奉耶稣的名祷告。阿们。
