QT 21/08/2025 Thu. Ezekiel 28 The Danger of a Prideful Heart

Scripture:
"Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you make your heart like the heart of a god, therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you, the most ruthless of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and defile your splendor." — Ezekiel 28:6–7 (ESV)
Reflection:
Ezekiel 28 is a prophetic word from God against the prince of Tyre—a powerful leader who allowed pride to take deep root in his heart. He had become so enamoured with his wisdom, wealth, and influence that he began to see himself as godlike. This delusion of self-sufficiency led to his downfall.
In verses 6–7, God speaks directly to the heart of the issue: “Because you make your heart like the heart of a god...” This is not just about arrogance; it's about idolatry of the self. It's what happens when we elevate our status, abilities, or intellect above humble dependence on God.
The result? God promises to bring judgment. Foreigners—ruthless and strong—will strike down the very things this leader took pride in: his wisdom and his splendour.
The warning is clear: pride puts us in direct opposition to God. When we place ourselves on the throne of our hearts, we remove God from His rightful place, and we invite discipline, not blessing. But this is also an invitation to examine our own hearts.
(1) Where are we tempted to take credit that belongs to God?
(2) Have we begun to trust in our own wisdom or image instead of resting in God’s strength?
(3) Do we quietly exalt ourselves while outwardly professing humility?
Encouragement:
The Gospel offers a better way. Jesus, though truly God, humbled Himself (Philippians 2:6–8). He modeled servant-hearted leadership and absolute dependence on the Father. Through Him, we are not only forgiven of pride but also empowered to walk humbly, giving God the glory that is His alone.
Prayer:
Lord, search my heart and reveal any pride that has taken root. Forgive me for the times I have elevated myself and trusted in my own strength. Teach me to walk humbly with You, recognizing that all wisdom, splendour, and power belong to You alone. Help me to live for Your glory, not my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
